April 24, 2023 Darleen Reid

Cumbria's valleys and fells (as the low mountains are known) are home to idyllic villages, high moorlands and picturesque lakes. Literary buffs will enjoy Wordsworth's Dove Cottage (go in March to see daffodils), and if you've got kids in tow, visit The World of Beatrix Potter. Or just enjoy a leisurely drive through beautiful scenery.

Revisiting Hapimag Bowness

The Hapimag site, facilities and Bowness area did not disappoint. In fact the Hapimag complex, from a family point of view, has improved since Covid restrictions. There are more activities in the visitors lounge and play area for children, and carers, to use and plenty of books, jigsaws and DVDs to borrow. The swimming pool at local Spa is a good addition also.

Great Place To Stay

Have stayed here a few times now while visiting family in barrow, great communication from the manager for a contactless check in. Lovely clean rooms, great walk in shower, large tv in room, USB charging points, great parking and close to everything you need. Worth mentioning I last stayed on a Friday night and wasn't disturbed by the noise of a Friday night in barrow!

Abbey Apartments

Great modern apartment fantastic location

Reviewed By AnthonyN206

We decided to return to the South Lakes Zoo since we hadn’t been for nearly 10 yrs & decided if we did we would stop over as we live in newcastle and it’s a long day to drive there in morning & straight back in 1 day so I looked for accommodation close by. I came across the Abbey Apartments in Barrow-in-Furness only a ten minute drive from the zoo and being a young family we wanted to be close to bars & restaurants but have our own space not a pokey hotel room. The apartment is perfect I booked the penthouse (number 3) for the night and the location is perfect and comes with a onsite parking space which is a bonus being in a town centre. The apartment itself is very modern and I’d say very recently converted or re decorated as it’s spotless and the sofas still have their tags on them. The penthouse has 2 good double bedrooms with king size beds there’s a family bathroom with a bath and a separate shower and there’s a cosy living room/ kitchen diner wit all mod cons 60” curved tv with sky ,free internet , electric hobb a washing machine that I doubt has ever been used as that also has the big sticker on the drum door & everything you have at home plates glasses knives forks condiments iron ironing board everything although we didn’t use any of them they are there ! The beds are very comfortable for a rental. The location is brilliant we visited the ODD FROG restaurant /bar which is a 2 minute walk from the Abbey road entrance (turn left when exiting apartment block from Abbeyroad entrance) it’s a live music modern bar / restaurant that serve Tapas I strongly recommend visiting & in the morning again if you exit the apartment from the Abbey road entrance if you turn right this time & walk approx 4 minutes you’ll find Weatherspoons which we all know is a great stop off point to grab breakfast before you set off on your day there’s also a Tesco Extra about a 10 min walk from the apartment if you want to dine in and a dominos , subway ,McDonald’s all walkable. I would highly recommend the abbey apartments if you looking to stop in Barrow-in-Furness.

I made a massive mistake staying here. Noise was unbelievable... Literally feels and sounds like there's a rave taking place below. According to some of the townspeople I've spoken with this is a haven for the local druggies. I can't advise you enough to steer well clear from this dump.

Location fab, stayed for three nights, not at all welcoming, didn’t see the owner at all , even though the place was very clean , we was very disappointed with the size of the rooms, the tv was like a postage stamp, the breakfast which we was included, they tried to charge as a extra at £7-50 a head and it came in a paper bag, rubbish, for what we paid I definitely wouldn’t return

Great Value

Reviewed By Andrew T

We booked Michaelson House for a short notice weekend break to the Lake District and it proved to be a great success. I've read a number of the other reviews for this hotel that aren't that positive and while I'll not dispute that the décor is a bit tired and it doesn't feel very modern I can only say that it ticked a lot of boxes in respect of what we required! Cost - it was not expensive particularly when you compare it to other Hotels more central to the Lake District. Location - it is a short drive to the tourist venues within the Lake District and is ideally placed for the nearby Safari Park which we were visiting. Add to that it is in a quiet residential area so no traffic noise and was very peaceful during our stay there. Family Room - the family room we had booked provided a good sized room with a double bed and two proper single beds, definitely much more practical and comfortable for the kids than the double sofa beds you often find provided in a "family room", add to that a good sized bathroom with bath and separate shower and you couldn't ask for much more. Facilities - the Wi-Fi was perfectly adequate to keep two teenagers happy! there is off street parking, the garden was lovely and the bar great for a nightcap. Food - we had opted to head out and explore the area so didn't eat main meals at the hotel however the full English Breakfast was great and set us up nicely for the day. Add in that Peter the owner was a great host and able to comment knowledgeably on local tourist attractions and recommend places to eat and we had a very good value stay here. If you are looking for an anti-septic, standardised corporate box of a hotel room then this may not be the place for you but if you want good value and something a little different then I'd certainly suggest you consider this place.
