The 6 Best Points of Interest & Landmarks in Izmailovo, Central Russia

June 9, 2021 Darwin Bolte

The political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of Russia, Moscow displays the country's contrasts at their most extreme. The ancient and modern are juxtaposed side by side in this city of 10 million. Catch a metro from one of the ornate stations to see Red Square, the Kremlin, the nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, the KGB Museum and other symbols of Moscow's great and terrible past, then lighten up and shop Boulevard Ring or people watch in Pushkin Square.

Vernissage

I could have spent all day here - and practically did. The whole site has ambiance and there's so much to see. We didn't see anywhere to pay to get in, so I think it might be free. It looks like it was an old amusement park area re-purposed as a flea market. Great photo ops around every corner. This is an amazing place - part market with booths/vendors plus a large area where people bring the stuff from their attics and lay it out on blankets. Plus, a few museums inside the white castle-ish area, and multiple places to eat. THIS is the place to buy your Russian souvenirs, hands down (nesting dolls, hats, art, dishes, fur, clothing, nostalgic items and pins, military weapons and old bombs, you name it- it's there). Bargain hard and BRING CASH!!!!!!! We found if you don't have cash, that some booth vendors will begrudgingly accept a credit card, but charge you an extra fee, plus march you across the entire market to the ONE guy with the credit card machine. (The locals bringing grandma's attic stuff to lay out on blankets only accept cash). For lunch, I ate at the meat skewer stands and it was fantastic - but try to find out what the locals are paying for their skewers and bargain from there at these stands - as a tourist, you will pay a little more and there's no signs with the prices. (They'll give you a taste of the meat before you buy- and once you taste it, you will buy). Have fun with it, they were very entertaining salesmen. If it's a food kiosk/cart, they already have the menu and prices already printed on the signs, so no negotiating. Don't miss the mulled wine vendor lady with the cauldron sprouting 3 dragon heads which are steam pipes, so it looks like smoke is coming out of them. Be sure to see the beautiful wooden church in the middle area - very unique looking. In the white castle looking complex area, there's a vodka museum which was entertaining - with the audio guide. There's also an option to pay extra and sample vodka shots. You will want to visit on a nice day since most of it is outdoors. So much to see and do here - I loved this place! Spend the whole day here exploring.

It is not ancient, but it is rather pretty. The main area has a series of museums; of vodka, of chocolate, of coin-making and a host of other things to see and do and learn. Beneath this imitation kremlin is a large market where you can buy a variety of things. Just be careful, as some sellers are very honest and others are less so (e.g. buying matryoshka dolls with missing pieces inside them etc.) It is a nice place to spend time though, and both children and adults could have a lot of fun here.
