La Chocolatera

Reviewed By ruthandvern - Wilton, United States

We took a taxi from the Malecon to the vista point above La Choclatera and after getting some sweet pictures we had him drive us down and out to the point where this site is. We had to pass through the Military gate to get out there, no big deal there though. The land is flat and mostly barren being on the volcanic rock from who knows when. The name comes from the color of the volcanic rocks, has nothing to do with chocolate. This vistas from the point are awesome. There's a snack bar that serves food and beverages, and a bathroom building, which is great since there is nothing else out there. We took the hike of about 40 minutes to La Loberia, the first part is sand but about half way (there are covered areas with water fountains along the way) it turns to a brick path. This has only been available in the past 10 years.

Cascadas de Dos Mangas

We had a great and exciting hike to the dos mangas waterfall trough the jungle-like forest. Our guide pointed out a lot of beautiful and special trees, flowers, birds and other animals. In 4 different spots we saw monkeys and we even saw a tucan bird. Our guide was great and even though we speak very basic Spanish and he didn't speak English, we understood each other. We booked our tour guide in the town of Dos Mangas instead of down in Montañita and this saved us $30. Just take a cab to Dos Mangas and arrange the rest ar the park entrance. Make sure to bring repellent, water and some food (its a 4 hour hike, mostly flat). Great hike!
