26-29/4 We three British middle aged guys were starting our three weeks in Pacific side of Mexico at the end of April. We booked a private room for us in this hostel from London in advance as it was the only reasonably priced place fairly close to the centre/Zona Romantica. We would have preferred somewhere in the centre but they were all above our budget as the Santa Semana holiday season was just finishing. We have stayed further out before and it was a drag to go in (although this time we caught a taxi a couple of times instead of walking for half an hour). We left the airport, got on a bus that went to the centre (not via the tunnel) and got off close to this hostel. We arrived at the door within half an hour of leaving the airport. We had to knock on the door as we did not have a SIM to call the number on the door. Luckily a man came down the stairs to see us in. The man, Roberto, checked us into this quite basic hostel, showing us a room on the top floor. The hostel was clearly still being constructed as the stair bannister’s were non-existent on some flights (do not arrive back drunk!), some window screens were not in place so the beds in the dorms were visible from the stairs and builders’ debris was around, especially on the top floor. The room was the only one on the roof which had a kitchen space, lounge area, two shower&toilet rooms and a roof space with great views across this part of the town towards the sea. There were a few tatty seats, benches and a table and a hammock. A sink was in the corner with lots of builders’ stuff and broken rubbish. This place needed a good clean and it would be quite acceptable! A guy was being tattooed by another guy and a woman, Diana, was cleaning the space. The room was quite large with a large Argentinian flag used as curtain on most of the east facing (morning sun) window. The room also got very hot in the daytime so the door had to be left open for a draught to cool it down. There were clean sheets and towels on the two big double beds which were a bit lumpy. I found used tissues, a false eyelash and dust under the bed unfortunately which is not a good start. My friend found something else floating in the toilet but will not tell me what it was. The tiled floor has a tatty rug on it by the bed. The beds were up a step from the main floor. The lack of a proper curtain meant we were woken early by the intense light flooding in. The fancy chandelier had seen better days and only one bulb was inserted and working, fair enough as it was a big fluorescent screw in which was strong enough but it was an over large chandelier! There was no mirror in showerroom (which had no hot water) and there was only a thin curtain across the entry to showerroom/toilet from the room so sitting on the loo was a bit exposed. A big mirror was by the door but not useful for shaving! We bought organic ground coffee in an artesan coffee shop round the corner and made coffee in the morning using the stove and a large metal mug bought in a cheap ‘25’ pesos shop on the way into town in Juarez. We used bottled water bought locally (3l from Oxxo). There was a massive industrial 1200W microwave and a common fridge which was useful. There was also lots of non perishable food left behind by other guests which were available to use. The fridge had a salad in it all the three days we were there so someone was not really maintaining the system. We were advised not to drink the water. An outside tap in the corner of the terrace was above an electric socket!!! Above it was a statue of the Virgin Mary. Life is a game of chance before you go to heaven here! The WiFi turned out to be the best we had ever had in our three weeks holiday! It was fast and reliable in the roof terrace where the router was based and fast in in the room too. During our three night stay only saw a couple of other guests. This place is still new and chatting to Roberto he had just set it up after his travels in China teaching Spanish and English. Expect building work to start in the cool morning and maybe carry on through the day. My friends did not realise it was on TA already so I could review it as it had no guests’ images or reviews so far at all! We had breakfast in the cheap Mary’s Vegetarian on the road nearby going up the hill and also had a cheap and tasty lunch in La Tia Ñaña just round the same corner. We always ate in Pepe’s Tacos and Cesare locally which were both very good. We also ate in the upmarket Traviata uphill and directly behind a couple of blocks (from which we could see the flag in our room window quite clearly). Overall the place was fine for nearly £19 a night for the room but it does need some basic problems and cleanliness sorted. Mirror in the showerroom is really important as is to clean the room thoroughly. The communal spaces also need a good tidy up! This place has potential and simple no cost things can make a big difference! We also found the many staircases to climb each time we arrived back at the hostel was a pain (no lift obviously) but the private room, kitchen facilities, terrace view and fast WiFi made up for it. It may be work in progress but stepping on screws (communal toilet showers being built next door) in bare feet left outside the room door is a basic no-no. Health and safety needs some attention! I bought a 800MB 15 day data only SIM for 100pesos from the main big Telcell centre nearby on the main road to the East of the Sheraton Hotel (another world!)

Blue Home Vallarta

Reviewed By GuideVenturous

We stayed in Blue Home Vallarta for 3 nights in March 2022. What we liked the most was that it was in a local neighborhood, away from the hustle and bustle and the tourist traps, but still a walking distance to the beach, to the Glorias bus stop (we went from there on some of our tours and to Sayulita) and we actually walked to the center every time (it took us less than 30 min), but you can also take the bus for 10 pesos from just around the corner. The staff were very friendly and kind and we enjoyed the breakfast every morning downstairs (fruit, yogurt, granola, coffee, sweet bread). There is also a nice rooftop with a sea view. Thank you for a comfortable stay in Puerto Vallarta.
