Brantome Police Horses & Friends

Providing a loving and final home for retired British Police horses. Brantome Police Horses provides care and rehabilitation for many horses and ponies alongside donkeys, dogs, cats, sheep, goats and chickens. We are situated in the heart of the countryside, ten minutes north of Brantome, South West France. Our primary aim is to provide a safe and caring environment for retired British Police Horses, for the rest of their lives. We open to the public on certain afternoons. The days will be specified on the home page of our website. As a tourist attraction in the Dordogne, We enjoy having people to visit and it is used as part of the rehabilitation process for some of our animals. We provide a great tea and there is a lovely gift shop to browse. With your help, we can give these animals the best possible care, for the rest of their lives. "Saving just one horse will not change the world, but surely it will change the world for that one horse."

Laurence of Arabians

The activity begins with a delicious afternoon tea with homemade cakes and local products, during which we present the horse species from prehistory to the present day, its needs and its relationship to man since his domestication. His senses are explored to approach him not only respectfully but also safely, then we go to meet the Arab horses breeding, living freely in natural conditions and in different groups. According to the desires of each one, we brush, scratch, communicate or manipulate ... Evolving among Bedouin horses is a comparable experience to swim with dolphins. Duration of the visit: 3 hours. On reservation all the year. The activity can take place even in rainy weather. Be sure to have winter boots and closed shoes in the summer, as well as clothing that is suitable for working with animals. Feet in sandals or flip-flops can not approach horses. Price 16 € up to 14 years / adults 20 € / 25% from the 3rd child / family rate 2 adults and 2 children 54 €.

Chateau de Bourdeilles

Built on a rocky outcrop, the Château de Bourdeilles is actually two truly exceptional edifices. A medieval fortress dating from the 13th century flanked by an impressive fortified tower and an elegant Renaissance dwelling which boasts one of the most extensive furniture collections in the Aquitaine region of France

We saw the signs for the chateau while travelling between Perigueux and Angouleme, and decided on a while to stop in for a visit. So glad we did!! The chateaux (there are actually 2 on the property are well worth a visit. We walked around the renaissance chateau on our own - lots of beautiful tapestries and furnishings collected there - and then the guided tour (included in the entry fee) of the medieval chateau/dungeon. Juliette was an extremely interesting tour guide with lots of info on the chateau over the ages. She dispelled a few of the myths about the Middle Ages, and explained a lot about the defences. She was very alert to the needs of everyone in the group as we climbed 122 steps up the tower. The view is beautiful!! They also have workshops on heraldry for kids (and big kids). Nice little gift shop.
