Miranda do Douro (Portuguese: [miˈɾɐ̃dɐ ðu ˈðowɾu]) or Miranda de l Douro (Mirandese: [miˈɾɐ̃dɐ ðl̩ ˈdowɾʊ]) is a town and a municipality in the district of Bragança, northeastern Portugal. The population in 2011 was 7,482, in an area of 487.18 km². The town proper had a population of 1,960 in 2001. Referred to as the "Cidade Museu" of the Trás-os-Montes region, it is located 86 kilometres from Bragança, preserving many of its medieval and Renaissance-era traditions and architecture. It has a language of its own, Mirandese, which enjoys official status in Portugal, in addition to cultural and historical discontinuity with the rest of the Portuguese state. The town is located on the border with Spain, with the Douro River separating the two countries. The nearest town in Spain is Zamora.

Museu da Terra de Miranda

O Museu da Terra de Miranda é um museu etnográfico situado na cidade de Miranda do Douro. O Museu está situado no centro histórico, e encontra-se instalado na antiga “Domus Municipalis” da cidade, edifício setecentista datado do séc. XVII. O edifício museológico, que se estende ao longo da rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque, deixa transparecer, através da sua estrutura, memórias que nos transportam para a prática e história do seu funcionamento, onde se desempenharam, igualmente, funções de Cadeia Municipal até ao ano de 1790. O edifício recebe, desde o ano de 1982, as coleções etnográficas e arqueológicas cuja narrativa expositiva pretende representar a vida social, cultural, religiosa e económica das comunidades da Terra de Miranda.

Tucked away in the corner of a square in the older part of town this small museum is packed with artefacts of local Portuguese life. The staff are very friendly, we communicated quite well despite language problems.
