Northumberland National Park

We are home to England’s cleanest rivers, clearest air and darkest skies. Delve into our Roman past by visiting Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site or lace up your boots for a day soaking up the stunning scenery and solitude of the Cheviot Hills. Relax in picturesque valleys, uncover hidden histories and learn more about our wildlife and habitats. Visit spectacular waterfalls and woodland or walk through ancient palaces and beautiful hay meadows. Leave the tarmac behind and go trail running, cycle out on quiet country roads or challenge yourself on two National Trails. This is Your Landscape… Get Stuck In.

We walked from Housesteads to Steel Rigg via Sycamore Gap. We walked a mixture of the wall path and the military way. The military way is much easier underfoot but there are well marked paths whichever way you go. Some parts along the wall are very steep. Paths, stiles and fences are well maintained and good car parks which you pay for as you leave.

Saltwell Park

I've loved this park, ever since I was a child. It's expansive, on a gently sloping hill with vistas of Gateshead and its surrounds. A walk around the lake in summer is a must, or a picnic on the lawns, but the meandering paths make this park a must. Beautifully maintained and complete with bowling greens, rose gardens, a maze and aviaries – as well as coffee rooms – it makes for a wonderful day out for everyone.

I done the osprey blue trail and then the lakeside trail. Most impressed with the cycle path around the lake, Lovely surface to ride on. Steep in a few short places and it’s a long way around but I do a lot o cycling. A mountain bike is not essential for the lakeside trail. it’s a well cared for path. One of best I’ve been on. I used a gravel bike but a hybrid, touring bike, etc will be fine but not suitable for a road bike. Very quiet and peaceful. Only downside is from the Castle car park the main lakeside trail could be better signposted, had trouble finding it as first visit to Kielder. Osprey trail not suitable for small children but older kids with MTBs will be fine.

This isn’t a vast place but has a good child-friendly exhibition about our environment & a lovely cafe. The staff were very friendly & advised on a walk. We parked car here for walk to Sycamore Gap - that was a great walk for us & the children (aged 7 & 10) - fab views & a good scramble.
