The equestrian centre is at Constancia, a delightful historical village located between the Tejo and Zezere rivers. Just one hour from Lisbon two hours from Porto it holds wonderful views framed by mountains with a rich animal life. You can enjoy the beautiful Lusitano horses riding throughout miles of trails between eucalyptus, pines, olives, cereal fields and the magnificent view of the rivers.

This is truly an all inclusive dream holiday for those of us who appreciate well schooled, kind, beautiful horses. It is a real privilege to ride Antonio’s horses whether that is in the school for a lesson or up in the mountains hacking out on the many trails high above the Zêzere or Tajo rivers. Antonio is the quintessential host – he will meet you at Lisbon airport and drive you to Constância – about an hour away – settle you into the lovely B&B a few minutes walk from the stables. The first ride is in the school getting to know your horse, making sure you are happy and well matched. Each day after that there is a hack out into the mountains or down by the river – long break for lunch – and in the afternoon a flat lesson in the school followed by jumping if that is your love. You will find that the horses are extremely well cared for and fit. There is an outdoor jumping arena, dressage arena and a small indoor arena – so plenty of space for various lessons. In the evening Antonio and Marissa took us out to one of many local restaurants to experience great local food in abundance. I have ridden all my life, bred horses, evented, shown horses – I was truly impressed with the quality of the horses, schooling and instruction. It is unusual and a real privilege to ride such well-mannered, highly schooled, beautiful Lusitano horses. The horses were well matched to each of our abilities and we all came away feeling we had learned a lot, had fun and enjoyed a wonderful break in the sunshine.

Golegã is Portugal's horse capital and there can be no better way to get to know its beautiful Lusitano horses than trip out with Rita, Miguel and Jack (the Jack Russel). With Miguel leading the way we were taken on a carriage tour from the historic Quinta dos Álamos estate through the Paul do Boquilobo nature reserve and into the town. You get to take the reins and guide your trusty steed along the lanes and tracks. Back at the quinta we were up in the saddle for a first horseback ride on the magnificent (and patient) mare, Varina. The team are great company, perfect hosts, a wonderful experience for equine debutants.
