The Nivola Museum in Orani is an institution devoted to the work of Costantino Nivola within the larger context of contemporary art, landscape and living traditions. The museum was established in 1994, a few years after the death of Nivola (Orani, 1911- East Hampton,1988) and has been expanding ever since. The permanent collection holds more than two hundreds sculptures, paintings and drawings by Nivola, who played a unique role in 20th century modernism as an artist who worked closely with architects. Aside from exhibiting Nivola’s work, the museum produces temporary exhibitions on a regular basis. These center mainly on the relationship between art, architecture, and landscape, with a special focus on artists and movements that were close to Nivola, whose friends included Le Corbusier, Jackson Pollock, Saul Steinberg, Willem de Kooning, Alexander Calder and many other protagonists of mid-20th century art.

The museum evolved with the intention of creating a cultural link between the cultural universe of the small town of Mamoiada, which is known throughout the world for its traditional masks, the "Mamuthones" and "Issohadores", and other Mediterranean areas, wich display a similar history and culture through their masks and Carnival celebration.

We were keen to visit Mamoiada to admire some of the softer landscapes and vineyards of Barbagia. We found this museum almost by accident and were so pleased we did. It is small and perfectly formed! A look at the collection of local and Mediterranean masks and costumes followed by an enthralling video presentation (in English) made for a morning very well spent. We were moved to buy a mask from a guy down the hill (turn right out of the museum down hill and follow the signs). Antonello Soluti is the real deal. He has been making them for years and used to take part in full costume on the 17th of January until the cow bells took their toll on his spine. Go and watch him making them, enjoy some of his homemade cannonau and cheese and buy yourself a mask from the very hands that made it! The town itself is well worth a look. More polished and well kept than some others 'nearby', it's square and small main street offered a choice of cafes and places to eat in very pleasant surroundings.
