Experience life of local people in Sarajevo by cooking and dining with them. A local family will host you in their lovely home and welcomed with a glass of rakija. A gastro-cultural journey will continue with learning how to make traditional Bosnian pita and stuffed vegetables. Along with the cooking, you will have a chance to learn how it looks to live and work in Sarajevo nowadays but also how it was during the Yugoslavia times. Chat and cooking will be followed with a good wine from Herzegovina, Kupres and Livno cheese and prosciutto from Trebinje. On the end, you will enjoy some of the typical Bosnian sweets followed by homemade liquor.

This is just the food tour we were looking for! We've done the old town walking tour. We've tried the touristy burek and cevapi places, and we wanted to know a bit more about how the majority of the locals eat. We got that along with a little more local history and walking into parts of the city not covered by old town tours. What I want to do is come back and have a hands-on session making burek so that I have a lasting souvenir to take back to the USA. Tell me when!

The village is a popular stop on the tour bus route from Croatia with multiple restaurants by the roadside. We were driving and there is plenty of free parking in and around this vicinity. A short walk leads you to a small square with many stalls for shopping and from here it is a 20 to 30 minute walk up old cobblestone paths passing an old Hamman and working mosque. A path right leads you up to the summit of the village. A right fork in the path takes you towards what appears to be a renovated fort, we opted for the left turn towards the old tower. There are great views from an open terrace close to the tower which overlooks both the fort and the whole of the Neretva valley. With care you can also climb the tower which is not in a particularly good state of repair. This latter is not suitable for anyone with restricted mobility, the steps up are narrow with some unprotected areas. Once at the top the roof is in a very poor state of repair and really needs money spending on it. Good for a short break if touring around. Everything is free entry.

Funky Tours arranged several excellent tours while I was based in Bosnia (one or two which were free of charge) between October 2020 and March 2021. This included a food and drink tasting tour, the siege of Sarajevo tour, a day trip to Jajce and Travnik, a day trip to the Srebrenica genocide memorial centre, as well as one to Herzegovina which included stops in Mostar, Medugorje and Pocitelj. Each tour was outstanding and the tour guides, having lived through the events you learn about on the tours, are fascinating people to spend a day with (a big thanks in particular to Taib). I learned so much about Bosnia, past and present, from them.    Booking the tours was always made easy and they even arranged a customised tour of the famous Sarajevo City Hall which included a visit to a replica ICTY courtroom (a big thanks in particular to Ema). I learned so much about Bosnia on each tour - from what it was like living through the war to finding out about the Bosnia of today.  Even although some of the events they cover are difficult for a visitor to comprehend (partly because the country has been largely rebuilt), you come away from it realising how relevant Bosnia's history is to the world we live in today. I was lucky enough to see first hand so many of the great things about the country - its diverse landscapes and stunning views across several towns and cities (especially Sarajevo), how much the country has been rebuilt in the last 20 years (it would not be fair to class Bosnia as 'war torn' any longer), the wonderful mix of architecture and traditions, its excellent local cuisine and of course the down to earth and wonderfully hospitable Bosnian people who are always welcoming of visitors. Bosnians are rightfully keen to show that their country has so much more to it than the war that ended there more than 25 years ago. Having been on several tours I feel like I am just about an expert on all things Bosnia and Herzegovina. I absolutely recommend Funky Tours - in fact I cannot recommend them highly enough. Bosnia is a great country to explore and because of its offering which includes Olympic ski slopes near Sarajevo and vineyards in Herzegovina it can be considered as both a winter and summer destination. The main thing is to make sure you go there at some point - and use Funky Tours to show you around! (the tours I went on were always carried out within covid restrictions, in a small group or one to one)

We organised a cooking class for a group of American university students with Dino and his team and we really liked it. It is not a professional cooking studio but their house would be an ideal location for that as the view is breathtaking. The team adjusted well to our needs and interests and we learned how to make a traditional tomato soup, and different type of bureks. The staff was very friendly and we loved the fact that some didn't speak Bosnian but was very easy to understand what we should do. For those going by taxi, be aware that the ride costs around 10 BAM and it takes 20-25 min to get there from downtown Sarajevo. I'm saying this because we got scammed and were charged double the cost.
