Dinghu Mountain Resort

Buggies available for a fee (RMB20 or so in addition to the entrance fee) to bring you up the mountain to various stops (5 stops in total that covers the key sites, despite the map showing 6 stops) on a hop-on/hop-off basis. This saves you time and energy from walking. Would also recommend the boat ride + hike at Butterfly valley where u can go into the forest and view the waterfalls. Very scenic landscape! The hike is ~30mins or so and there are some rather steep and uneven steps to climb though generally not too challenging and does not require any special hiking tools. Some parts might be slippery so care must be taken. It is dry season when we visited in Dec so the grand waterfall only had trickles of water and as such we did not see its full glory. The other smaller waterfalls are ok. We spent abt half a day (8.30am to 1pm) and covered most of the sights. Though you will need more time if you intend to pray at the temple or have a proper meal in the premise. We only sat down shortly for a bean curd break. Place is easily reachable by public transport (~1 hr from city centre by bus) and is not crowded during Dec. The site is well maintained and definitely worth a visit!

Xinghu Lake of Zhaoqing

We walked to the lake from our hotel which was nearby. We came in the east gate and didn't see anyone collecting gate fees. The area is huge and the hills have that rock structure that one sees in Chinese paintings. Unfortunately someone persuaded us to ride on their motorbike "bus" which then instead of taking us around the lake as they said, took to the streets and wanted to drive outside the lake! For that we could have taken a bus. And then he insisted on his 40 RMB payment which we refused when we got off once we realised what was happening. I think there are bikes for hire but they must be from another entrance.

Very scenic - the pictures say it all! Can easily spend an entire day here if you really want to visit all the sites and hike up the crags. Be prepared for some rather steep steps though. Weather was a little foggy when we are there in Dec. Can imagine that it will look even more fabulous in spring on a sunny day with blue sky, white clouds and lots of flowers! Admission fee of RMB70 applies. Bundle tickets with Dinghu Mountain (the other key attraction of Zhaoqing) available at RMB120 (valid for 2 days).

Ancient City Wall of Zhaoqing

I was interested in primarily looking at the tower construction. The posts are set upon stone or concrete plinths and held by friction like pretty much all of these wooden structures. The Dougong or wooden bracket system are huge and allow the lateral forces to focus onto the beams for earthquake resistance. Unfortunately the building appeared to be locked though I could hear voices inside so you can't go inside it seems. Toilets are just past the tower. There are some bilingual signs near the Piyun tower. We just took a #2 bus from our fairly new hotel which was near the lake.
