The Menshikov Palace

A vision in yellow, this majestic palace - now housing Russian cultural artifacts - once belonged to Alexander Menshikov, ruler of Russia for two years until accused of treason and exiled to Siberia.

Reviewed By Alan186346 - Thirsk, United Kingdom

The story behind the building is remarkable and shows the power play of Peter the Great's friend - Menshikov was lucky to keep his life!. The building grew over time and it stood, originally, right next to the river. It is more of a home than a grand palace and reflects the styles of the different periods of construction. Artefacts are a curiosity, of course, but it was the building itself that held my interest. The information cards, hand held, were well written and thoughtful.

Icebreaker Krasin

Now a floating museum, this historic ship helped rescue the Italian polar expedition led by Umberto Nobile, led Allied arms and supply convoys in World War II and later conducted polar research expeditions.

Reviewed By leeatlife - Ashford, United Kingdom

So glad I visited this ship, the history behind this icebreaker is astonishing. No audio guide and my tour guide had next to no English but that didn't detract from an excellent tour. There is a lot of English translation throughout the Museum but even without you can sense the history and work it out for yourself, from a Armed escort during the Russian convoys from England during the war back to a rescue boat when an Italian airship had problems on an expedition to the North Pole.

Zoological Museum

Although the museum's current home is too small to display all 17 million species in the collection, more than half a million are on display in the form of skeletons, stuffed animals and other exhibits.

Reviewed By a1eksandar - Belgrade, Serbia

Apart for being famous as a museum with the most displayed mamoths, this place has immense collection of outstanding number of species. If you do not know Russian much of the displayed staff will be limited for you since not many have English translation.
