Stott Park Bobbin Mill

Looking through the things to do list we came upon the Stott Park Bobbin Mill. We thought that this would give us an insight into how an order but essential piece of equipment used in the weaving factories and the home was created. We were not disappointed by the enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide that conducted us through the various aspects of why and how the bobbin mill came into being. A thoroughly enjoyable time spent learning about the hard life the workers led and how they overcame some the difficulties. Our only regret was that we didn't visit at a weekend when the steam powered version of the demonstration of the some of the machines would have taken place.

Horrendous zoo. Conservation not touched upon at all. This zoo is all about entertainment. The animals are kept in tiny, bare enclosures with no stimulation. Really wish we had read some articles about it before going along. DO NOT GO TO THIS ZOO IF YOU HAVE ANY NOTION OF ANIMAL WELFARE AT ALL.

We booked ahead for the Santa Christmas rail journey and overall it was great. There was music onboard, the children were given presents (decent quality compared to grottos etc) and we were offered Sherry and mince pies. The whole experience took around 90 minutes with Christmas carols along the way. The only reason for 4 stars was the stop and start as the train on the outbound leg. Every 4 or 5 minutes it stopped. I presume this was because the train tract was not that long; however, stopping at some for the railway stations would have been far better and logical from a customer perspective.
Overall a great day out and recommended.

We regularly pass by this way and called in on speck for lunch a couple of days ago. The food was rather basic. Oven chips were only just cooked, pale, dry and tasteless. The crumble on the veg crumble turned out to be chopped up chunks of dried bread and the salad a few leaves, one tomato and no dressing.

We had a nice visit to Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre on our way home from the Lake District. We took our dog for a walk along the woodland trail, which has plenty of benches where you can sit and think under the tree canopy, but it’s worth noting that there are no bins around. The temple is beautiful and very different to anything else you’ll see nearby - or further afield for that matter. We didn’t sample any of the classes on offer here, but there are plenty of options, including free meditation sessions. We finished with lunch in the cafe; dogs are allowed in the lounge so we ate there. The room was spotless, with people cleaning and polishing every nook and cranny. The hummus and cucumber Sandwich was very nice, coming on chunky bread, with potato salad, crisps and carrot strips. Afterwards, I ordered a slice of apple cake and it was one of the nicest cakes I’ve had in some time. The same couldn’t be said of my partner’s chocolate and caramel slice; it was nothing like what we expected, and I don’t even know how to describe it, but maybe it’s an acquired taste. The whole meal was very inexpensive, and the walk around the grounds was free (unlike Muncaster Castle), making it excellent value. After a quick browse in the shop, we headed off having had an enjoyable, unique experience. Highly recommended.

We stumbled across Unsworth’s Yard as we walked through the streets of Cartmel. We had a very informative visit at this micro-brewery and purchased a few bottles of beer for Christmas.
One of the owners quite happily explained how the brewery was set up and about the different beers they produce and supply locally.
Without doubt I would recommend a visit to the lovely village of Cartmel and Unsworth’s Yard.

The Hoad Monument

The prominent memorial on Hoad Hill was built in 1850 in honour of Sir John Barrow, a naval explorer and Second Secretary to the Admiralty, who was born in Ulverston. It is a replica of an early version of the Eddystone Lighthouse. On the 15th of May 1850, the foundation stones of the lighthouse monument were laid by the two sons of Sir John Barrow. There were huge celebrations in the town, with a procession, a religious service, and much rejoicing. The monument was finished by the end of 1850, and was promptly struck by lightning, causing nine stones to be dislodged from the cupola. It was fixed up, and a lightning conductor fitted. The total cost to build the monument was £1,250, and a further £136 to repair the lightning damage. Most of this was paid for by public subscription, and £100 was provided by Trinity House on condition that the monument had the capability to be used as a real lighthouse if deemed necessary at some future time. Since then, the monument has survived the elements, with the help of several restorations, the most recent of which was completed in 2010 at the cost of £1.2 million. Nowadays, it is maintained by a team of volunteer lighthouse keepers. It is open to the public on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 1pm to 5pm, from Easter to the end of October, when the flag on the hill is flying. The monument can be hired for weddings and other celebrations.

A variety of routes up this hill make it interesting, some are steep and some meander along a fairly good path to the top. Good views of Morecambe Bay and the surrounding hills.
The Hoad Monument (locally known as the Pepperpot) is open on Sundays when the flag is flying - the 112 stairs up to the top will give you a bit of extra exercise but the view is just as good from outside from one of the handy benches.
