Museo Municipal Rincon de Atacama

The Museum paleoanthropological "Rincón de Atacama is born by the initiative of a group of partners and neighbors in the city in order to rescue, preserve and promote natural and cultural heritage department of Rio Hondo. It opened up back in July 1995 and since then has received numerous delegations of tourists and students from the region and neighboring regions. The museum has a multipurpose room and a mezzanine which displays the entomological collections, archaeological and paleontological, highlighting the latter two by the scientific value of the material collected. The sample of archeology has preceramic lithic period (4,000 BC) and numerous urns and vases of different cultures that developed in the Department Rio Hondo in prehispanic times. The sample specimens of paleontology has been nearly complete with well preserved animals (mainly quirquinchos and Glyptodonts) that inhabited the region for about 5 million years. One of the main objectives of the Municipal Museum 'Rincón de Atacama' and the community of Las Termas de Rio Hondo is that these assets remain in the region and may be a legacy for future generations.
