Shimanto is a city in southwestern Kōchi Prefecture, Japan. The modern city of Shimanto was established on April 10, 2005, from the merger of the city of Nakamura, and the village of Nishitosa. It is located on the Shimanto River.

The Shimanto River is the longest river in Shikoku, and the Bridges spanning the river are famous for having no rail guards. The Bridges were constructed this way to prevent the bridge from being damaged during floods.
Of the various Bridges, we chose to visit Sadano Chinkabashi, which is the longest bridge crossing the river, and also the most downstream. We visited around 5pm and there was no one else, so we had plenty of photograph opportunities. It was a pity that there was some minor construction going on so we didn’t get the signature view of the railing-less bridge. Nevertheless, the view was amazing and it was an experience to have your legs dangle off the bridge (be careful of course!). There is free parking near the bridge.
Definitely worth a visit if you are in Shimanto city! Also, the map from the Shimanto City Tourism Association website is really helpful if you plan to visit the area (just search "Shimanto bridge map" on google and you should be able to find it).

足摺岬にほど近い宿を出発したこの日の私たちは、宿毛市から内陸に入り、四万十川をさかのぼるように、川に並行している国道４４１号線を走りました。国道に入ってから、高瀬沈下橋、勝間沈下橋と進んで、岩間沈下橋に着きました。この国道４４１号線はけっこうな通行量がありますが、多くの部分は車がすれ違うことのできない１車線の道路でした。対向車が来ると、すれ違えそうな場所で待つか、バックしてすれ違うかを幾度となく繰り返してたあと、片側１車線の普通の道に出た直後に、岩間沈下橋がありました。
四万十川の上流に向かって進んでいることになりますが、両岸の山々が次第に高さを増し、険しくなっていく様子が、とてもよくわかりました。緩やかに蛇行しながら流れる四万十川とその河原、両岸の緑濃い山々と岩間沈下橋がつくる風景は、四万十川を代表する景色だと納得しました。

四万十川沿いを走る国道４４１号線は、多くの部分が１車線しかないわりに、対向車も多く、慎重に車を北上させていた中で、勝間沈下橋にたどり着きました。勝間沈下橋は、橋脚が３本ある、珍しい沈下橋なんだそうです。
私たちは河口近くから川の様子を見ながら走ってきたので、川の両側の山が次第に険しくなっていく様子がよくわかりました。勝間沈下橋のあたりも、両側の山は険しさを増してきていましたが、広い河原と、ゆったりとした流れは変わっていませんでした。

We stumbled across the nature park by accident and were quite taken by it. I had never thought there could be so much to learn about dragonflies. I was quite impressed with the work that had gone into establishing the park.

中村御所跡に建立された神社で、創建後１５０年程度の新しいものです。一條氏の遺徳を顕彰するために地元が造ったものらしい。一條氏そのものの縁起は応仁の乱にまで遡る相当なものですが、神社そのものは京都の平安神宮みたいに近世になってからのもので大したことはありませんでした。ただ、例年１１月に挙行される「一條大祭」は全市を挙げての盛大なものと聞いています。今回は例年８月第一日曜日に行われる「女郎蜘蛛相撲大会」を見るために行っただけです。

高知県の第三セクター鉄道。開業が新しいこともあって路盤はしっかりしているしトンネルや高架橋で山間部や市街地を走り抜ける近代的な鉄道です。JRの特急列車も乗り入れているのであまり情緒豊かなローカル線といった風情は感じられませんでした。

四万十市にある沈下橋です。
数多くの沈下橋が架かる四万十川にあっては、それ程有名な沈下橋ではありませんが「予土線からしっかり見える沈下橋である」ということが利点です。
かなりの速さで走る予土線の列車ですが、それでも意外に良く車窓の風景で見えたこの橋に、私は非常にお得感を感じました。もし、予土線に乗られる機会があったなら、しっかり窓の外を眺め、この沈下橋を見てみることをお勧めします。

ここも一條氏関係の神社で、幡多の総鎮守として、一條家守護神として京都の石清水八幡宮を勧請して造られたものです。正八幡とも広幡八幡とも呼ばれていました。ここは京都五摂家の一つ、一條氏関連だけあって、京都に倣っていろいろな行事が実施されている。文化的にも京都との繋がり、影響を色濃く受けている地域でした。京都人なので町の雰囲気にも京都の匂いが感じられた。
