Lagoa da Faja de Santo Cristo

Reviewed By mikeedeedee - Darlington

There are a couple of walking routes which will take you to Lagoa da Faja de Santo Cristo. We chose the one from Faja dos Cubres as we only had a few hours (having eallier been to Pico da Esperanca).
We parked our car near to the little / cafe bar in Faja dos Cubres and within about 50 metres there is some excellent information about the walking route (there's also further parking about 500 metres along the road near to the start of the track).
The walk itself takes in some beautiful and unusual coastal scenery. The path is wide enough to take a quad bike (which are allowed at certain times), we were passed by a few which appeared to be used by local residents. The path undulates and although we were wearing boots, it would be perfectly possible to do this walk in trainers. It took us about 3 hours to complete the 8 kilometre round trip but that was because we kept stopping to take photographs! In our opinion, this is a 'must see' part of beautiful Sao Jorge.

The natural pools in Velas are a little kinder on your feet as there is a small concrete area on the land side of the pools which can be used to access the water (the ones in Sao Miguel had to be accessed across the lava).

Aventour - Azores Adventures

The Aventour is a holiday activity company, which operates in the sector of Tourism of Adventure and Nature. It offers new experiences since 2000 in this lost paradise in the middle of the Atlantic. For this and for all these years of experience, we create quality products, always under the constant guidance of our guides and monitors. The well being as well as our sense of responsibility are the necessary ingredients to give you different holidays full of new experiences, away from the daily "stress" and wrapped in this "Magic Nature" that this island offers you.

My husband and I booked the Caldera Plus package which included a guided hike, canyoning down Waterfalls, lunch, and an exit in ATVs. Our tour guide Luis was excellent, he pointed out several local plants, was skilled with the ropes while canyoning (always good when you are going down a waterfall), and knew the area, locals, and trails well. Lunch was amazing, fresh clams and seafood with local cheese and bread but the best part of the day was the views and rappelling down the Waterfalls. Definitely recommend if you have a day on Sao Jorge

Miradouro para a Faja do Ouvidor

After arriving at Norte Grande, follow the signs for Fajã do Ouvidor. At a crossroads, go a 100 meters or so and you will see the miradouro with a large parking area.
This gives you the most breathtaking complete view of the fajã, and shows you truly how unique this geographical formation is.
The descent is not difficult, only be careful of loose sandamd leaves especially if they are wet.
In the summer, bring your swimwear, because there is beautiful natural swimming pool where Fajã do Ouvidor meets the ocean.
After returning to the top, you can also visit the nearby Casa do Parque museum.

Miradouro da Faja dos Cubres

We pulled into this viewpoint (it is more of a pull in rather than an elaborate picnic area that we experienced in Sao Miguel) to take photographs of Faja dos Cubres and Faja da Caldeira de Santo Cristo. However, it is hard for the camera to do justice to this spectacular scenery. If you find that this first viewpoint is busy, then there is another further down the very windy road!

Arco Natural de Velas

This archway is located slightly outside the centre of Velas (a 5/10 minute walk) on the coastline behind the medium sized Hotel Sao Jorge. There is free parking in the immediate vicinity and a little viewing area too. Certainly worth a quick stop for some photographs if you're in the area.

Parque Florestal das Sete Fontes

Reviewed By NomadicTraveller7 - Fuerteventura

Parque Florestal das Sete Fontes, (Sete Fontes means Seven Springs) is, as the Landscapes of Azores book, described it, an ‘enchanting’ park, ‘lovingly laid out in wooded surroundings reminiscent of a fairy-tale forest’. In the central area there is a small chapel and a stone model of the map of the island shaped like a boat, with lots of frogs on the stone sides and in the water around it. There are beautiful picnic areas, a large enclosure with deer and a short walk to a marvellous viewpoint with vistas along the north side of the Islands with the precipitous wooded cliffs. There is also a lovely, though rather long walk (1 hour each way) to the lighthouse at the furthermost western end of the island and the abandoned lighthouse of Faro dos Rosais. There was only one other family at Sete Fontes when we were there.
From the central area of Sete Fontes there is a wide red gravel track leading up to a Pico da Velha, a hill at 493 metres above sea level with fabulous views of Pico mountain and Pico island and down to the lighthouse at the end of the island. We had Pico da Velha to ourselves
