For years I have wanted to visit Rouen Cathedral. The front of the Cathedral is really quite breathtaking and the quality of the carved stonework second to none but in common with many French cathedrals the interior is relatively plain. A few weeks previously I had been to Koln Dom (Cologne Cathedral) which just knocks you out both inside and outside. The above said Rouen Cathedral is one of the masterpieces of European architecture and not to be missed.

We had a walking tour of Rouen, including the old town area. Rouen is a beautiful historic city - so many old buildings from the 14th & 15th century. The United States is such a young country. It's hard to fathom that some of these buildings have been around for 700 plus years. This was one of our stops while cruising the Seine and Rouen is the closest port along the Seine to the Normandy Beaches of D-Day. Aside from Rouen being known as the place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, the city has so many beautiful historic buildings.

This museum has been founded in the beginning of the 20th century and is a very interesting museum just behind the Musée des Beaux Arts. You will discover old ironwork, from medical instruments to keys, signs and doors and many, many other interesting things.

This is an amazing feature of Rouen with a clockface on each side showing months and seasons too. There are several floors reached by a spiral stairway and handheld speakers giving information on each floor. Nota good idea to be in the bell tower at 12 noon!!

Rue Eau de robec, Place du Vieux-Marche, Rue Saint-Romain, Place de l'Aitre de St. Maclou are all beautiful little streets in Rouen one should wander. There are ample places to sit and enjoy a meal, drink some cafe and enjoy a crepe.

Another study about restoration and preservation of buildings and architecture by acknowledging their importance to the city. World War II did not do any favors to their life expectancy. Restoration of the architecture to its former glory was a monumental achievement. The history of the building goes back many centuries. For those of you who like me have reason to pay respect to this accomplishment and to become astonished by earlier stone design I thought that this place was required viewing. Worthy of admiration as much as the Cathedral is for the same set of reasons. Just from seeing the exterior I recognized that this was a piece of valuable architecture that so many other French cities have in this region. If you neglect to see this and walk by with your eyes closed or refuse to go inside then there are ten minutes to spend in the penalty box. It is sad that we do not know the name of the artists who completed the work or contemplated the design plans. If you like to admire older architecture from the 16th century then you need to pay close attention to the flamboyant style - and this is a remarkable example of Gothic design - this was for my eyes delicate and exuberant at the same time - there is reason to come to Rouen and spend time here as it was not that far from the Cathedral. I will admit that it was the Cathedral that brought me here, but this city was a treasure house of artistic design and historically important buildings and places to see. Here is one example. I had come here from Caen by traveling with the benefits of a eur-rail pass and a student identity card many years ago long ago before the range of calendar dates suitable for readily indicating the time of my visit were made available for completing this review. I had brought with me a degree in French and history for intellectual sustenance. I did learn much more than what I had expected to learn about so many topics. Crowds weren't large. A background in art history and architecture would be an enormous help. Don't bring young children as this visit was much more suitable for adults. Those with talent and artistic inclinations should not be left behind. Do not bring your pet dog. Do not wander around or go inside munching on two ham sandwiches or drinking a milk shake. Be more respectful. This is not an amusement park. As I recall and I might be wrong today there was no admission price. Since I was so close to the train station, the center of town and the Cathedral - as are most things here - I decided to walk through the streets. Well worth my time - maybe one hour for seeing this building. Like so many things here if you need a reason to attend a college for getting a four year degree here it is. Teaching art history for French churches and buildings with pubic service has not been the top curriculum priority of most secondary schools that I know. For this reason and for others I would hesitate in bringing many adolescents here. This is serious business as this building presents many intellectually challenging topics that are customarily part of a college level education. The same can and should be said about the city.

My friend and I decided to walk up the trail to the top of the hill. It is a fairly strenuous walk but the view is incredible. Everyone who goes to Rouen should do this.

If you find yourself in Rouen, you'll be hard-pressed to miss this street. I enjoyed the clock but the street was clogged with residents and tourists and there was a feeling that a cruise ship had just docked and disgorged thousands of tourists. Other than the clock, I didn't find anything on this street that wasn't represented elsewhere in the old town. Go, but don't have the high expectations that can be expected after Reading the glowing reviews.

Lots and lots of historic half timbered houses in this area standing in small narrow streets. Imagine that this is what it was like 500 years ago! There are several small shops and cafes to stop in.

I am here with my brother and father and cannot say enough about my impressions of the staff at this hotel. From a short notice reservation to the quick and friendly manner that all the staff we interacted with responded to us I have to rank this hotel experience as one of the best I have had compared to a lot of other stays elsewhere....and I haven't been her for 2 hrs. The staff have organized a dinner reservation, retrieved our luggage and generally have made me feel like this is the only place to stay - in all of France! Great job! Forward to the next 72 hrs knowing I am taken care of! 9 out of 5 stars
