Skafidia Beach

Reviewed By evalia99 - Athens, Greece

When talking about Skafidia beach most people refer to the one that stretches out in front of the all-inclusive Aldemar hotel. In fact, Skafidia is a tiny little bay to the right of the hotel that you need to drive through Skafidia village to get to. Anyway, the large beach is nice and sandy with lots of umbrellas to rent whereas the other one is a rather small one that you need to squeeze in among other people with no guaranteed view of the sea itself. Again some umbrellas and sunbeds to use for free with the obligation to order something from the beach bar. Very clean, shallow waters for both Beaches, however they seem to be battered by winds all summer and it is very rarely you will see any calm waters, especially in August. We've been told by friends who stayed at the all-inclusive hotel that they did not get the chance to swim in the sea for the whole of their 10-day stay. However, due to the shallow waters it is fun to swim with the waves, especially for kids who did not get enough of it. For parents, it was not as relaxing as we wanted, as we had to keep an eye on the kids most of the time.

Beer-Bike Katakolo

An excellent trip by the harbour, seen beer bikes before and wanted to try them. Great fun, best of all Yannis and Georgio were excellent hosts, really good fun, they had my wife Greek dancing in the Sunshine while I drank beer and listened to Georgio stories, what more can you ask for. Would highly recommend this for anyone. It's not too hard to pedal either, we managed it with just 4 of us.

Our group of four was met by Panos exactly as planned. We whisked away to Olympia, arriving just before some of the tour buses, so we were ahead of the crowds. After our time at the Olympic site, we drove through the countryside to meet with relatives of our friends. What a gorgeous beach. However, since relatives had not planned on a particular restaurant, Panos knew exactly where to take us. We lunched at a seaside location that was absolutely perfect for traditional Greek food. Because we met with relatives, Panos was disappointed that he could not show us more of the gems of the Katakolon region-- a winery, nunnery, large farm, etc. But we told him we'd save that for another visit. If you want a knowledgeable, professional, personable guide in the Katakolon/Olympia area, book Panos at Katakolon Taxi. You'll be glad you did

Olympia Land Winery

An unforgettable excursion to the family winery Olympia Land Estate which is into the green valley of Olympia and just 5 minutes from the archaeological site. The particular terroir of the region, the excellent microclimate, the clayey and sandy soil help our vines to grow healthy and very aromatic grapes in order to produce high quality wines. In the Olympia Land Estate you have the opportunity to be part in a tour which start with a walk on the vineyards where you learn about the cultivation of the vines, continue in the production area and finally in the cellar with the oak barrels. After the tour you will enjoy samples of our wines, our homemade olive oil and also other traditional snacks in the air-conditioned reception area. We are on your disposal to help you to organize quickly and easily your excursion which will be for you a memorable experience.

Monastery of Kremasti

Reviewed By beckyd02 - Springfield, Ohio

Beautiful, interesting place located near the archaeological area Of Olympia. This was part of our tour while in the port of Katakolon. It is a Greek Orthodox monastery. The nuns were busy preparing for something special that was happening the next day, so were all bustling around - but we were free to roam the site. The chapel itself is built inside a cave. Very ornate.
The view from Kremasti in magnificent as it is located on the top of a hill where there is a beautiful view of the surrounding Mountains, Folio forest and Erymanthos river along with olive groves. This place is definitely worth visiting.

Hermes by Praxiteles

Reviewed By Ramadama - New Providence, New Jersey

This statue made in the 5th century BC is spectacular. The body is sculpted to perfection is the classic Greek style. The marble looks so smooth. It appears that at some later date the Romans added the legs from the knee down with Roman sandals and a cross bar with the draping under the child. You can see these additions because the marble is a slightly different color. This is one of the best pieces in the museum.

Vlychada Cave

This site is in the inner Mani a few kilomteres south of Areopolis. It is one of the most spectacular caves anywhere, and one rides around in it by small boat.

Reviewed By rankin2010 - Atlanta, Georgia

Enjoyed the trip. Beautiful caves and colors. Well lighted. Beautiful colors. Somewhat spendy, but understand based on all the work that went into them. Felt like I was going out of the boat a few times.
Well worth the time to see them if you have not spent much time in caves.
