Ourense is a province of northwestern Spain, in the southeastern part of the autonomous community of Galicia. It is bordered by the provinces of Pontevedra in the west, Lugo in the north, León and Zamora in the east, and by Portugal in the south. With an area of 7,278 square km it is the only landlocked province in Galicia. The provincial capital, Ourense, is the largest population centre, with the rest of the province being predominantly rural.

You arrive here by taking a good paved road from Parada de Sil. You leave your car and walk about 100 meters to the viewpoint. Below flows the winding Sil in a deep canyon before it enters the Minho north of Orense. The Balcones de Madrid is not named because you can see the capital of Spain from here but because it was the place chosed by the women to see their husbands go down the river in small boats on their way to work in Madrid.

The monastry is basically a shell but in excellent conditional. We visited in early spring so all of the chestnut trees were still bare. The scenery is spectacular on the drive to the monastry. How do they tend to their grape vines which grow on the steep cliffs either side of the river. There is also a couple of good wineries to visit.
Well worth the drive through the region and a visit to the monasteries and castle at Castro Caldelas. A good day's drive on the backroads. We had a decent lunch in Castro Caldelas at Pousada Vicente Risco. It was basic and cheap. No name local red wine was okay too. Get a bottle

After 15 years of visiting and living in Galicia, went to the Springs for the first time and loved it. Should have gone many times before... They are not easy to find with Google Maps, look for the "aparcamiento termas de Outariz", which will take you to the free dirt parking, from there it is a short walk to the bridge over the river, where the Springs are.

Lovely church but in the evenings on the steps and in the plaza below there has been local entertainment every night we have been here. Local communities coming in to play music and do folk dances.

Planned to just visit the Cathedral to say some prayer but we are told that we have to pay to enter (they said locals don't have to pay)... We had no time for the complete tour so we decided not to enter... The woman just let me in as I said I wanted to pray. I had a chance to have a glimpse to the main altar... Next time I will make sure to have time to do the tour.

Monterrey Castle is a fortress - palace , located in Monterrey (Orense ) ,I on a hill overlooking the valley of the Tamega River , at the confluence of the roads linking zamora, Orense and Chaves (Portugal ) . it has three walled enclosures on an elongated ridge. In the first and furthest from the central core is now the Parador de Verin, . The second area is accessed through a door flanked by two guard houses , reinforcing the remainder of the enclosure with several bastions. The last enclosure is accessed through a door with pointed arch formed by large segments , On the top of the hill a castlle with a big tower let you take photographs of the valley.
It is one of the best preserved fortresses in Galicia. It was declared a National Monument on June 3, 1931 and is currently a Cultural Interest , in the catalog of monuments of historical heritage of Spain

This is average within the context of it not being anything unique or exceptional. The town itself has some nice local shops and restaurants (technically we only ate at one of them). But the old town itself is relatively small compared with towns like Oviedo and Leon.
The tourist train/tram to and from the thermal baths lets off in Plaza Mayor.
In general we were disappointed with our stay in Ourense because the thermal baths weren't hot enough. The Plaza Mayor or old part of Ourense is not enough to warrant going out of your way for a visit. However, if you need to get from the Atlantic Coast to Leon or Oviedo, then Oursense was a reasonable transit stop with some activities and a restaurant we enjoyed.
