The 10 Best Things to Do in Province of Cuneo, Italy

January 27, 2018 Etsuko Causey

Cuneo (Italian) or Coni (French and Piedmontese) is a province in the southwest of the Piedmont region of Italy. To the west it borders on the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (departments of Alpes-Maritimes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes). To the north it borders with the Metropolitan City of Turin. To the east it borders with the province of Asti. To the south it borders with the Ligurian provinces of Savona and Imperia. It is also known as La Provincia Granda, Piedmontese for "The Big Province", because it is the fourth largest province in Italy (following the provinces of Sassari, South Tyrol and Foggia) and the largest one in Piedmont. Briga Marittima and Tenda were part of this province before cession to France in 1947.

Montaribaldi

Tradition and innovation. This is the oxymoron on which the Montaribaldi company grounds its great success. Founded in 1968 in the very heart of Barbaresco by Giuseppe Talliano and his wife, it was then taken over in 1994 by their sons Luciano and Roberto. Now the whole family is running it, brewing with passion the best quality wines while always respecting the oldest traditions. As matter of fact, in the last few years, the company has decided to bet on innovation without changing its best traditions. It is exactly that which makes the company able to continuously improve the quality of their wines, while always promoting their land. Such careful management, along with the favorable climate conditions, the richness of its soil, the implementation of new biodynamic techniques, the accurate selection of wines and the careful vinification let Montaribaldi obtain a wide range of excellent, unique wines which are appreciated all over the world and which have become a clear example of the “glocal” philosophy.

Visited this winery and received a tour of the facility and had a incredible wine tasting of many of their wines. Antonella, our host was exceptional!! She enlightened us with thorough information on the Piedmont wine region, their wines and the various grape varietals! This is one of the best wine tastings my husband and I have ever experienced!! (and we've visited many wineries around the world). An absolute must do when visiting this area!

The Langhe landscapes are just amazing, we spent four days exploring the area so much to see. We had planned 3 drives, 1)being the Wine Road, another to Barbaresco, Nieve, Canelli and Mango 3)Cocconato, Moncalvo, Castagnole Monferrato and Nizza Monferrato. We turned off tolls etc and easily navigated our way along the country roads stopping often to take photos.

We rode to the top of this col from the French side. It's a long climb but well graded. The valley is beautiful and at the top one really feels at a border. The view on Monte Viso is an added bonus. Maybe less well known that the Iseran, Galibier, etc. and it is harder to fit into an alpine traverse (we did an out-and-back from France) but it really is a MUST DO.

Sergio & Sylvia welcomed us into their home to share stories and wine. Neither spoke English, so we were joined by their 16 year old daughter who added greatly to the experience. We tasted all of their wines of erred and each had a plate of food prepared by Sylvia. The last was local cheese topped with her homemade Dolcetto jam. What an afternoon. Our conversations went well beyond wine and when the conversation was over we knew we had made new friends. We walked out buying a case of wonderfully made wine whose style was indicative of Sergio's hard work.

What a fantastic afternoon! We planned a lunchtime visit and allowed 3 hours, knowing that Piedmontese food and wine cannot be rushed. However, the food was so delicious and the wines delightful: we stayed 6 hours and left happy, well fed, and well stocked with fine wine. Our hosts were extremely welcoming and knowledgeable and the whole day was a taste of Italy at its best. Thank you very much indeed. We look forward to seeing you again.

We received a personally-designed two-hour tour on 10/9/15 from Elly. She is a remarkable woman with so much passion for her vineyards and wines that I wish I could import her to the US even once for an inspirational talk to my nurse colleagues on the transference of positive energy and deep connection with grapevines (patients) and fermentation chemistry (the treatment process). Her holistic approach with the team at "sunrise hill" (her boyfriend and his father) towards wine-making is going to mean you WILL have heard of them in the very near future.(From Alice: Marco - I'm sure you realize that your University education brought you more than a foundation for your craft, but the luck to have met this 'crazy' partner for life.) The wines are delicious and a solid start for a novice but completely drinkable for the seasoned oenophile.
