Madu's shop is THE place to go shopping for presents and souvenirs in Ella. It has everything you need from decorative items to useful objects (masks, gems, jewelry, tea pots, brassware, postcards, etc.) at the best prices.
What's more, Madu, the owner, is the sweetest guy ever. He's always up for a nice chat, will explain you every object that he sells with huge kindness. The place is up to the man. I can only recommend R.M.S. Antique shop.

You can arrive by bus to Dambatenne factory or take a tuk-tuk to the top at Lipton's seat. We recommend taking the short cuts to be immersed in the nature and say hello to the tea pickers.
We also went through the Tamil villages and saw the lovely kids coming back from school.
We don't recommend to visit Dambatenne factory though. 250 Rs and not even a tasting experience.

Beautiful experience, we saw many kinds of animals, different species of birds, crocodiles, foxes, deer, lizards, buffalos...We saw a couple of elephants, hiding in a bush at the beginning of the tour. After 5 hours or so we should have been on our way back, but our driver took extra effort looking for more elephants as he finally found a family of 5 members with a baby elephant! He was very patient and spent there another 30 mins with us to make sure we enjoyed the tour fully. The elephants got so close we could have nearly touched them! At one point, one of them got too but our brave driver chased him away. We went without a guide and it was ok but I think that the success of the tour really depends on luck and on your driver.

We didn't make it to the upper falls, but our driver took us through the hotel and to the lower falls, which were quite spectacular. Very high with lots of water, you get up close and personal to these falls. Just stand there and feel the wind and mist hit you in the face on a hot day. Quite lovely!

Concrete steps to the top. Dirty and strewn with rubbish.
This is spiritual pilgrimage, not a travellers trek.
There are locals of all ages, some really struggling with the steps and I can’t see how rude tourists barging past them in an effort to get to the top as quickly as possible adds to their experience.
The view from the top is good but it’s very crowded.

It’s such a shame how they organise these Jeep Safaris. When we arrived there was a huge queue of 4x4’s waiting for tickets (a process that can take up to a couple of hours!). We were lucky as our driver was very experienced and luckily had a friend near the front of the queue-so instead of a wait of 90 minutes we only waited about half an hour. What I don’t understand is why the whole process can’t be more streamlined-there is an awful lot of “rubber stamping” in Sri Lanka and, even though it was peak period, there was only one person selling tickets! Again, our jeep which could have had 10 or 12 people only had the two of us! If they rationalised numbers in vehicles it would be much better for the environment and easier viewing as there wouldn’t be as much traffic spooking the animals.
That aside, the Safari was excellent with lots of animals to see and photograph in the most idyllic setting. Obviously I can’t compare Udawalawe to the other National Park Reserves but we thoroughly enjoyed our morning-if only the companies could streamline their procedures.

To view the waterfall, you must hike for at least an hour. It is not a natural path as there are concrete steps and small Bridges and so on. But still quite challenging. Plenty of little shops on the way to buy water bottles and rest if needed.
The waterfall can be viewed from a platform and it is very nice place to try visit if you are in the vicinity. Have to buy a ticket to enter, very cheap though.

Horton Plains National Park is a best place in Sri Lanka for camping. There are 3 camping sites and we have to pre-book a site at the Wildlife Department of Sri Lanka. I prefer site near chimnee pool. All three sites have sanitary facilities. Can not drive vehicles to sites. All sites are located about 600m from Hotron Plains visitor center. According to the rules of Wildlife Department we were not allowed to make fire at night. We have to bring portable stoves for cooking. Making meats (BBQ) also not allowed.

It is a scenic picture at the waterfall of Ramboda! The rainy days made the waterfall full of water which made it even more wonderful!
It is possible to walk down to a Terrace near by the falls and make beautiful pictures or just stare at the powerful happening.
