K. Tsiolkovskiy's House Museum

When in Kaluga there are two things you must see, one is the State Museum of Cosmonauts and the other is the Tsiolkovsky House Museum. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was the theoretical physicist in the 1920/30's, and his work laid the foundation to all todays space exploration. The house has been preserved as it was when he lived there and its interesting to where such a great man came from. There is a guide to take you around the house if you wish, but only in Russian, however they have English guide notes available for all rooms if needed. A thoroughly good museum and recommended to visit.

An excellent idea for a a theme park in a very green location. The exhibition about different countries was very interesting but some of the exhibits lacked interactive features. The best and most popular houses were the ones with demonstrations. Outside there are some Mongolian tents and log cabins from different parts of Russia and the CIS. There are a number of international themed hotels under construction which look very impressive. An assault course for children and adults was very popular, as was the Husky kennel. Once the park is finished it will be a great option for people looking to escape Moscow for the weekend and enjoy a bit of fresh air and fun.

Historical and Architectural and Natural Memorial Estate Linen Plant

A very interesting attraction. Long ago here by a personal decree of the Russian Tsar Peter the Kaluga Industrialists built and formed the country's largest plant for the production of sail canvas and paper. During the Russian-French war of 1812 this manor sheltered the headquarters of the Russian army, and specifically its commander M. I. Kutuzov. And later it became the property of the family of Goncharovs, from which came the wife of "chief" of the Russian poetry A. S. Pushkin and he, by the way, have been here many times. And nearby during the second world war was quartered the famous Russian-French squadron "Normandie – Niemen". Unfortunately, the fate of the manor and the whole village turned out to be unenviable. The manor was rebuilt after destruction and turned into a museum-reserve "Goncharovs - Pushkin", however, environmental conditions in this place are extremely poor. Now, besides the paper mill, there are enterprises of chemical industry, and even Sukhodrev river flowing through the village, looks very unpresentable.

St. Nicholas Chernoostrovsky Convent

Reviewed By gentbrugg - Moscow

Seeing the appearance of the monastery, it is difficult to say that in former times it was closed a few times – because of its poverty in the late 18th century and of the actions of the Soviets in the last century, when for the monastery was found another use. It was functioned as a museum, college, and even residential apartments. But now it is restored – for the third time in its history – and looks rich and impressive. Now its history is correlated with the memorable battle that took place here during the Russo-French war of 1812, after which it was almost entirely destroyed – with the exception of the gate, that had the depiction of Christ. Now here stands a separate bell tower nearby. Though it is older than two centuries. In general, the complex consists of several buildings, the main of which is the restored (or actually newly built) St. Nicholas Cathedral.
The monastery is worth the visit, especially since in principle it is almost in the heart of the city. For example, to it from the famous Museum of 1812 is only about a kilometer.

Kaluga Saint-Tikhonov Hermitage

Reviewed By gentbrugg - Moscow

This is a men's monastery. Formally it was known since the 15th century, since its founding by the recluse Tikhon of Kaluga (also of Medyn). In fact, what appears before your eyes, began to exist recently. Several times the monastery was destroyed - by Tatars, Lithuanians, Germans and Soviet power, when within its walls were located the technical college and even the military unit, and 5 times it again rebelled at this place. Even the old name of the village was changed – now it is named after the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who've never been here! He visited Kaluga, other places in this region I have been, but this – never. But in the village, which is called Tikhonova pustyn (Saint Tikhon Hermitage), there are no traces of pustyn itself! The monastery is clearly rich – it has three stately temples (blue, green and yellow – if to distinguish them by color), spring, flower beds, paths, spiritual education center, Sunday school, publishing house, library, hotel, bakery. The relics of St. Tikhon are in blue one - the church of the Assumption.
The place is largely legendary. Written sources about the history of St.Tikhon and the monastery almost did not survive, only word of mouth rumor. But sometimes it is stronger than any destruction.

Well kept park in the centre of Kaluga with a nice view over river Oka and the new district. You can even find a tree which is more than 500 years old, another tree that was covered with handicraft and the houses at the square are beautiful, nicely restored and worth seeing and spending some time!
