Konark Sun Temple

The 13th century temple, also known as the Black Pagoda, is a monumental Hindu structure dedicated to the sun God or Surya.

Reviewed By Ayushi P - India

The Sun Temple at Konark is situated around 35 kilometers from Puri and the two places are connected via the picturesque Puri Konark Marine Drive. The drive from Puri to Konark is a delightful experience, with the trees forming a stunning canopy during most of the journey.
On reaching the Konark Sun Temple, it is difficult not to be mesmerized by the massive stone structure with its spectacular intricate carvings depicting various themes and stories. The detailed carvings on the famous chariot wheels left me awestruck about the expertise that went into achieving the artistic finesse during the bygone era.

This museum not so well known as of now sprang a huge surprise for us. Amazingly beautiful, very well maintained, this museum can compete to be classified as a World Class Museum. Hats off to designers, museum is neatly organised, with audio visual support. Lovely Gardens sourround the museum which has many tribal huts/dwellings created for visitors to experience living style of various tribes from Odisha. The museum staff are also very nice and well behaved. Hats off to Government of Odisha for this creation. Please ensure it's upkeep and promote this place to tourists and even locals.

Jagannath Temple

Reviewed By Lahiri66 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

You walk into a temple complex that is stunning in its architecture and so full of history and spirituality only to be accosted by priests at every turn trying to coerce you into paying for prayers you don't need. The temple can be a little confusing but follow the crowd and politely decline the 'pandas' who will try to pull you to parts of the temple you need not go (they make you part with your money there!). The crowd can swell very suddenly so have your prayer and move away to a quiet spot an drink up the beauty of this temple. Don't forget to look up at the art on the ceiling! Note that handphones and other recording gadgets are strictly prohibited. So, make sure you leave them with your driver or someone who is not entering the temple complex with you. The parking area is around 500 metres away. You will need to pay and take a minibus to get to the temple.

Hirakud Dam

Looks great!
There are towers to view the dam, lake, river at the same time on the both sides, west and east.
When I visited, east side tower and the surrounding area was closed for maintenance.
Then, the view from the west side tower was awesome.
Look at that.
On the westside of the tower, a monument for the memory of people who lost their life during the construction.
On the east side, there is a statue and plates to honour the engineers.

Mangalajodi

Reviewed By Saydelah - New Delhi, India

We visited courtesy of the Mangalojodi Eco-tourism NGO that has some basic accommodation in the village as well as offering bird tours in the wetland (with reformed poachers as guides). We didn't stay in the accommodation but enjoyed both breakfast and lunch with them - simply but good food. (Godwit Ecolodge also offers accommodation in the village).
Mangalajodi was easy to find from the main road. Driving down to the bird viewing area one is greeted by at least two groups offering boat tours (the NGO and the village committee). The boat tour lasted about 1.5-2hrs - no engines, bamboo pole. It was peaceful and great to get close to birds at their level.
Back at the boat station there is a raised earthen walkway through the wetland from which one can view the birds. We didn't have time to walk it all but certainly worth it and seems to be free (one can hire a guide to help ID birds if needed).
The experience was great. They are obviously well-organized and ready for tourists, both local and foreign. Some snack stands, a toilet - didn't use either, but I would recommend linking up with Mangalajodi Eco-tourism early on to set up lunch in the village.

But the temple premise is small. Shodash Puja is observed on every Dusshera. Suna Besha is the most famous Besha of Maa.

Mukteswara Temple

Reviewed By pratimagoel - New Delhi, India

This is the biggest temple of Bhubeswar and was built in the 10th century. The place has no entry free, and no active worhip is conducted here. The atmosphere is charged with history-and wandering inside one can feel it. There is a pool with black fish at the back- but here since the entry is unguarded we were unhappy to find people smoking and putting their feet in the water. we do need to keep such places clean!
