When 13th-century Portuguese Queen Isabel passed through Obidos and marveled at its beauty, her husband King Denis I simply gave it to her. For centuries after, the kings of Portugal followed suit, presenting the picturesque little town to their queens as a wedding gift. With its white buildings shining as brightly now as then, the walled city of Obidos is very popular with tourists, its hillside location offering amazing views of the Estremadura area. The medieval castle is a main attraction.

The area of the town of Óbidos is located on a hilltop, encircled by a fortified wall. Óbidos remains a well-preserved example of medieval architecture; its streets, squares, walls and its castle are a popular tourist destination.
Each July Óbidos castle hosts a traditional 'Medieval Market'. For two weeks the castle and the surrounding town recreate the spirit of medieval Europe.

Walking around the walls of the castle is definetly a must! However, I think you do not need to walk the whole wall because it is very long and sometimes it is a bit steep and the worst is that in most parts there is no "protection", so you are just walking there and there is no other wall on the side blocking you from falling. :D But definetly walk around a bit and find good photo spots and just enjoy the view! No entrance fee.

You pass through the Porta da Senhora on entry into the Obidos township. It is a spectacular artistic display and definitely worth some moments to ponder and look (if you can ignore the streams of tourists flowing through too).

You can choose to be part of this Kindom history and theme, or just feeling the atmosfere. Good music, some additional entertainment. How ?
You and your friends can select what to dress, a King a Priest, or any other from the Kindom of Obidos. It's just a few 3 euros this year to rent the custom, and make such a difference for the atmosphere...
You can enjoy to see the horse fights, the animation, the medieval music, the iron work to build the armors, all kind of medieval work is also represented there.
Must dinner there, pleanty of places to choose there, you don't need to include the meal from the ticket. Avoid Friday & Saturday where it normally gets full.
Take all your friends with you, and enjoy local wine, the location is fantastic, weather during the night is a little bit more cold there than in Lisbon ( 15 ~ 19ºC) but with a little bit of red wine it can help...

If you're in the village be sure to go in to see this. It's small but lovely. Very typical European church. Each one has something special. This one has quite a bit of gold leaf and the altar is lovely.

Obidos. What can one say. I have listed a couple of similar reviews showing some of the beauty of this wonderful village/town/city. This main street is filled with vendors, flowers growing everywhere, (see my other review,) walled in castle, etc. Just stroll along, have a ginja in a chocolate cup, or two or three. Enjoy this beautiful place.

This is a lagoon near Obidos (10 minutes). Its actually between Foz do Arehla and Bom Successo, its stunning, lovely safe Beaches and superb sand, ample parking in Foz and lots of beach bar for coffee

When you arrive by car into Óbidos you can park near the remains of one of several Roman aqueducts still standing in Portugal. All are amazing for how well they have weathered the centuries since their construction--far better than other, more modern buildings. Much credit goes to the manner in which the Romans made cement, far less porous than what we typically have today. See for yourself!

I'm not sure if this well maintained old church just beside the castle still functions as such but is definitely a book store. Unfortunately for a lot of the tourists, almost of the books I looked at were in Portuguese. It would have been nice if they had a separate section for English and other language books ( if there was one I didn't see it) as it would probably boost tourist sales considerably.
