My wife (Judy) and I have just enjoyed a fantastic tour of the Keswick Brewery and tasting. Our host, Nigel, was quite superb. So enthusiastic and informative and so welcoming. An excellent visit and the samples of the ales were delicious. Can’t recommend this tour more. Only regret is that the beer is only sold in Cumbria but understandable. Can’t wait to return and sample some more and see the new Fox Tap bar open. Thanks Nigel and good luck from Tony and Judy Hodge of Salisbury.

Castlerigg Stone Circle

Dating from about 3000 BC, this is one of the first stone circles built in Britain, which is perched atop a high moor with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Reviewed By 90josephr - Cumbria, United Kingdom

Castlerigg Stone Circle on the outskirts of Keswick is a magical place. It is one of the oldest remaining stone circles in the British Isles, older than Stonehenge, and easily accessible either on foot, by bicycle or in a vehicle. The site is owned by the National Trust with free access to all. Standing in the middle of the Neolithic stone circle the stunning views of the surrounding fells (mountains) and valleys can seem subtly different as the clouds above pass overhead. When the cloud cover is above the fells the higher Lakeland peaks that can be seen from this dramatic amphitheatre include Helvellyn, Blencathra and Skiddaw. There are ample and free parking spaces on the adjacent road. Go through the kissing gates and there are recently restored information boards explaining the history and heritage of the stone circle. Follow in the footsteps of countless generations of scholars, writers, poets, artists and photographers and soak in the wonders of this enchanting location.

The Lake District Wildlife Park

A walk on the wild side just a 10 minute drive from Keswick. With the backdrop of the Skiddaw massif the emphasis is very much on conservation, education and engaging with visitors - our Keepers are keen to talk and enjoy passing on their knowledge and enthusiasm. Wander around our beautiful 24 acre parkland and see over 100 species. The magical Bird of Prey flying displays have been a regular feature since the park opened and we have gathered an eclectic mix of over 100 species from Anaconda to Zebra. The Granddad of the park is Brian the Lar Gibbon - he is the oldest in Europe and has pride of place in the centre of the park where he and his family can be seen swinging from the massive Oak tree. We are members of BIAZA and over the years we have successfully worked with Zoo stud books to breed species including Lynx, Asian Fishing Cats and Ring Tailed Lemurs to name just three.

We had a fantastic few hours here- could have done with more time actually, as so much to do and see. Setting is lovely. The animal talks were very informative. We absolutely loved the Lynx twins- such beautiful animals, never seen them up close before. Their enclosure is really and justly for them, plenty of undergrowth and hiding places as they are shy, but the keeper feeds them near the fence so they can be looked at. Wonderful birds of prey display- very informative, and funny, the keeper kept everyone entertained and the birds were swooping over our heads. You can tell their handler loves these birds. Great play area for older children, agree could be more for smaller ones but there is soft play near the reptile enclosure. Loved the meerkats. Good shop. Cafe extremely busy, and food okay. Highly recommend. Best on a dry day as everything outside except for reptiles.

Contrary to many reviews below, we found this visit to be excellent. Yes, the museum is only housed in one rom, but the displays are very informative and interesting along with old photographs and a quiz sheet given on entry. There is a fascinating area on the use of the pencil to hid a rolled-up map for espionage in the second world war - James Bond would be proud!! the quiz was good for both children and adults and necessitated reading the displays and finding the answers to twenty questions. Everyone receives a Derwent graphite pencil on entry (value almost £2) and, should you complete the quiz, a further three watercolour pencils as a prize!! For the £4 entry fee, really good value. An excellent coffee shop and artists materials shop with discounted prices on many items. Only sad part was to see the old pencil factory in a dilapidated state, since manufacture moved out some years ago to Workington.
