This Cathedral is apparently the second most visited Cathedral in France, after Notre Dame de Paris. I am not surprised. the building is a mellow red, and the exterior is literally covered with high Gothic carvings. I have never seen anything quite like it. You could spend years studying these statues, and the mind boggles at the skills of the craftsmen who produced them. My husband climbed to the viewing platform and even on a rather dull wintry day enjoyed the views, although with nearly 350 steps be prepared for quite a hike!

It says something about a town when one of its top attractions is a bridge across a river.
Fair enough that river is the River Rhine and the bridge connects the countries of Germany and France,
and it is a particularly impressive piece of engineering.
But it's still just a bridge and the fact that it is one of the most interesting things to visit when in Kehl tells you all you need to know about this town.

If your river cruise boat docks on the German side of the Rhine here at Kehl, then my advice would be not to bother with the boring and drab town centre but head to the St. Nepomuck Church and the start of the Altrheim lake. Walk the lake to the far end where you will find the tall viewing gallery tour which provides commanding views from the top and all the way to the Black Forest on a clear day.
Then from here stroll back down the Rhein Promenade to your boat.
This, by a country mile is the most interesting thing to do in Kehl.

I love to visit some places and you can imagine how people lived in a certain period of time, those little houses so beautiful and charming, walk around and try every little corner, we loved it

The French guide who took our tour of Strasbourg in the morning commented that she often visited Kehl for the shopping as it was seriously cheaper in Germany than over the border.
So having a few hours to kill in the afternoon we duly headed into Kehl town centre.
If I see her again the obvious question will be..... Why?
I've been to enough cheap tacky high street shopping centres in the UK to recognise one when I see it.
It's even got multiple equivalents of the U.K. Pound shops (everything for a pound for those not familiar) and if you think of the tat you get for a pound just think of the crap available for just a "euro".
And instead of the ubiquitous fried chicken shops that blight down market UK streets, here it s Turkish Kebap shops. Although I have to say the kebabs on offer looked a lot more palatable that some of the things that pass as chicken on a UK high street.
The small 'High Street' shopping centre is certainly a cut above what is outside but has a dozen small stores tops and won't detain you long.
If your river boat also docks here when visiting Strasbourg, the strong advice is give the town centre of Kehl a serve in favour of a stroll around the Altrheim lake

On a recent visit to Kehl, my partner and I came across the Passarelle Mimram which connects Kehl, Germany with Strasbourg, France. It is restricted to walking and biking. Superb experience when standing at the Rhine's midpoint marking the former international border.

Exterior of he church is not so impressive as for instance Strasbourg Cathedral. But step inside and you will change your opinion. Numerous frescoes, dating from xiv and xv century, are interesting enough. And what to say about the choir screen with organs? This church has unique interior and is real surprise. It remains only to imagine what were the churches like in their original colorful states.

Don’t pass up an opportunity to visit this superb museum documenting the rich history of Strasbourg over the centuries. We lost track of time and spent almost four hours exploring every corner. Free lockers are thoughtfully provided so you don’t have to carry anything with you as you roam the exhibits, and the audio guide is excellent.

Located just in front of the Strasbourg Cathedral, this museum displays impressive sculptures and vitrages from the Middle Ages, which were originally located in Strasbourg Catedral.
The items were removed to protect them from pollution (and were replaced by copies).
The museum also has pieces that came from other churches.
Well worth a visit. Up to 1 hour.
The museum has several floors and no lift.
