Shah Mosque

Reviewed By bobca1947 - home

This is located at the far end of Imam Square. It is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful mosques in the world. It is flanked by two tall turquoise minarets, and its massive entry portal is 80 feet high. It is beautifully decorated with cobalt, turquoise and lapis lazuli mosaic tiles and intricate stalactite moldings. The inner courtyard surrounds a reflecting pool, and four iwans (portals) lead into four fabulously decorated sanctuaries. Begun in 1611 by Shah Abbas I, this mosque was dedicated in 1629.

Something of a Tardis: entering via the narrow front door and corridors gives no hint of the splendid courtyards and ponds within. Supposedly built as a home suitable for object of the builder's affection, the daughter of another wealthy merchant of Kashan, it did the trick and they were married and lived for many years in this magnificent building.
There are cool courtyards with ponds, elegant stained glass windows and superbly detailed stone carvings. Not to be missed!

Vank Cathedral

Reviewed By TC0241 - Lautrec, France

This place was quite unexpected given we had been seeing Mosques in large quantities.
The Cathedral was established in 1606, dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of Armenian deportees that were resettled by Shah Abbas I during the Ottoman War of 1603-1618.The internal decoration is simply stunning in both design and colour.
The museum alongside gives reports of the Armenian deportation and the cruelty metered out to them.
It also houses lots of ancient bibles and artifacts which are well weorth a visit.
Tucked away in the Armenian quarter and close to some cafes and pastry shops in case you need sustenance :)
