Ioannina Castle

Reviewed By SazanS2 - Tirana, Albania

The Museum and the castle of Ali Pasha Tepelena, (who as an Albanian ruler under the Ottoman empire), that I visited, was a great place and I would like to call it magnificent regard on historical importance. It was a well-preserved sight surrounded by welcoming people around that gave us even desserts to taste. During my two-day visit to the city, the cicerone didn't lie, never told the full story but discarded everything about Albanians, and their magnificent costumes and his activity related to an independent Albanian state. Lord Bayron had enthusiasm for the extravagance of Albanian dress during his visit to Ioannina (Janina) in the letter he wrote to his mother about his purchases: “I have some very ‘Magnifique’ Albanian dresses". Nothing was told during the visit about Pasha's and Albanians\Arvanites Great Contribution to Greek Independence even though the little library outside was full of books regarding Arvanites' contribution. They have removed the full name of him from all the city except his (Ferman) death sentence which written in full, Ali Pasha of Tepelena.

Katogi Averoff Winery

The Katogi Averoff winery is in Metsovo, a mountain village built some 1100 metres above sea-level. The oldest parts of the winery date back to 1973, when work began on a new building required to cover the company's ever-increasing production needs. Its cellars can boast over 1200 oak barrels in which our red wines mature, while the winery shop offers rare and collectible bottles of wine for sale from its 1974 vintage on. A guided tour of the winery employs a range of audio-visual media to offer the visitor an original introduction to wine production and the history of the winery, and is rounded off with tastings of a selection of Katogi Averoff wines.

If you’re a lover of wines and visiting Metsovo, the Katogi Averoff vineyard is a must see. Located on the original site founded by Evangelos Averoff in 1959, and renovated by his son in law in 2008, the tour and wine tasting takes about an hour and is still a family run affair. The tour is free and there is an additional charge of approximately 3 Euros per 50ml wine sampled, with no limit on how many you can try! The lovely Lena guides you through the tour, giving a detailed introduction on the background, the grapes grown at the incredibly high altitude and the processes used to produce a relatively wide selection. Our favourites were the limited harvest Flogero (Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon) and the Inima (Negoska), both reds. It was an added pleaser to meet Alexander Averoff, grandson of the founder. Although you don’t get to see the nitty gritty of production, the tour covers all areas and ends in the well stocked gift shop where you can buy various sizes of all wines, along with vinophile paraphernalia and locally produced artisan food.

The pools are very close to the main road. They look amazing and they are very inviting on a hot summer's day. The water is quite chilly but not impossible to swim in. You can go along the stream as it gets more and more beautiful and you can discover little frogs and even little water snakes or leeches.

Dodoni Sanctuary and Theatre

This is another example of how the 'ancients' managed to choose extremely beautiful settings for their constructions. A nice twisty-turny drive up from Ioannina gets you to these ruins which are substantial; good information on placards around the site, certainly enough for non-specialists.
