Trondenes Church

The world`s northernmost stone church, dating back to the late Middle Ages (1250). The church is set in scenic surroundings and boasts several treasures and a beautiful interior. Guided tours by appointment available year-round.

This is a must see church for all beauty lovers. The altar has a large number of colorful wood figures of religious persons. In the main altar they separate from most churches I have seen. All three main figures are females, but they are holding their babies like Jesus and John the baptizer. It is the church closest to the sea in Norway, and had 8 meters of walls facing the sea the frighten off sea traveling robbers. It worked, as the robbers could not see there were no protection at all on the other side. Take bus no. 12 to visit this pearl of a church with roots from the 1100.

In our two weeks trip to Norway this hike was certainly the one with the most beautiful scenery of all. The views of the sea, Mountains, lakes and rocks all with their incredibly vivid colors left us speechless. The climb is easy enough and you can get to the top in around an hour of even less if you don't stop for photos (but you will). The scenery once on top is an astounding 360 degrees of pure beauty. I would advise to try and do the walk in the evening sun (in the late spring / summer).

If you are close to Hardstad take your time to visit this historic site from World War 2. The guide gave a 90 minute tour around the Gun Nr. 4 (the other three are not accessible) in 3 languages (Norwegian, German and English). The tour as well as the site itself were very interesting and in a very good condition. If you are interested in war history you should visit this place.
As this place can only be visited by guided tours you should check the website to get more information regarding the schedule.

You cannot visit Harstad without taking a walk up to Gangsåstoppen. The view from the top is absolutely stunning, you can see the whole city, and the sea and Mountains in all directions. There is even a stationary telescope that you can use if you find a point of interest you want to study closer. The walk up there is quite easy, 20-30 minute walk in not to harsh a path, and when you get up there's benches to relax on. Pretty much anyone can go there without to much difficulty. Definetly worth every minute of your time!

It is like you enter into the Wilderness when you leave the parking lot - there are good restings places "gapahuks" along the route- we did not stop- but it is costom to bring your picnic with you in a rucksac and lite a fire for a small BBQ -since the resting places have a roof the weather conditions does not matter. A very good place to spend a few hours and the kids - of all ages- love it !

Rokenes Gard

Old trading post and guesthouse dating back to the 16th century. The property has been in the same family for 10 generations, since 1673. The gallery in the former barn is venue for an exhibition by the Harr siblings. Sale of crafts from local producers on Lavebrua. Beautiful setting for lunch, dinner, meetings, weddings and other events, either in the main house from 1750 or the converted cow-shed from 1899. Accommodation in the 16th century farm storehouse. There is a 9-hole golfcourse on the property. Restaurant and café open daily during summer from beginning of June to late August. Open Sundays throughout the year, otherwise by appointment. Welcome.!

The Rokenes Gard is situated a little drive outside of Harstad. We recommend taking a taxi. The Gard (meaning farm) is one of the oldest and biggest in the area. They have turned the barn into a three floor restaurant and home crafts sales exhibition. Though they can seat hundreds, they also have more intimate areas. The rooms, and all items decorating the walls, are spectacular. The food are based on traditional Norwegian food for hard working people. So we found the portions to be solid. But all dishes had a gourmet twist, and tasted very good. The only "complaint" was that with so much food, tasting so good, we all overate. Luxury problem :-)
