We experienced snowfall for the first time on the way to see the Shirakawa-go village. It was an amazing sight for some of us who had never experienced temperatures below 5 degrees or seen white snow.
Our tour bus was able to go uphill and we did not have to use the shuttle van. At the Observatory deck, one can view the picturesque scenery of the thatched-roof homes in the village below with the snow-laden background. Beautiful and breathtaking!
At the deck, a professional photographer was stationed there and we had to queue to take individual photos. The printed photos are then collected at the nearby store after paying for it. The photo frame has the Shiragawago name and village picture on it. Worth paying the price, as our mobile phones were not able to capture the scenery.
It is advisable to come prepared with warm outer clothing, scarf, gloves and suitable shoes for walking in the slippery and icy surface.

Walking trails that transcends back in time. Tsumago was a great place to stop, handmade goods, where one resident served us a pot of hot tea while we waited for the bus. A must see. And we were able to enjoy the fall colors. Options available to have your luggage transported from Magome to Tsumago, while you enjoy the trails.

Took the bus here from Takayama. We decided to do this instead of Shirakawa as we heard the latter was insanely crowded.
There were some queues for the ropeway cars but it was a very pleasant experience overall. The views are great at both the midway and top stations. There's also an opportunity for snowshoeing and hot footbaths if you fancy!

We discovered this town because of the cycling tours it offers. An easy 15 minute JR train ride from the more famous Hide Takayama, this delightful place has much to see with a lot less tourists about. Much slower paced and very relaxing. It's so lovely and very easy to walk around, with little traffic. There's a sake factory, museums, temples etc and a good selection of shops and restaurants. We stayed in Takayama, but noted a few western style hotels here, so it would be a good base from which to explore the Hide region. Definitely recommend the local cycling company. Easy cycling, even for novices and families.

There are plenty of marine Aquariums around Japan, but this one is specifically Freshwater. Huge variety of exhibits, and probably one of the only places you'll see things like the Japanese giant salamander.

Overlooking the town from above was an exceptional experience. Everything was like what we usually saw about past Japan in movies or animations. The old streets and buildings were well preserved. On the foot of the mountain was a temple with graveyard. And the castle just sat on the top of the hill. It was around 15-minute walk from the parking lot to the castle.

Mt.Kinka is not too high mountain good for short hike.You can also take a ropeway straight up.But you have to hike up at least 300 meters or so to the castle anyway.The view of Nagara River and the Gifu city is very good.Must go place in Gifu City.

Many people come to Iwamura as part of the Nakasendo Highway. When you do, please take time visiting the Iwamura Castle. It's a large area, and although ruins, it's beautiful and interesting. Fun to explore and imagine what it was like back when thriving. Some English explanations.

There's a pond in Seki city whose name is an unnamed pond.
It was just a Reservoir but it is now called Monet's pond, having been named after its beauty like the picture "Water lilies" drawn by Monet.
I hoped for a glimpse of it and drove to there.
When I watched it in reality I thought it was less beautiful than I'd expected.
Curious to say, however, it was quite photogenic.
If you go there during hydrangea & water lily season, you might be able to see more beautiful scenery.

Gero Onsen Gassho Village had about ten traditional houses on display. An hour was more than enough time to look around and the 800 yen admission was pretty steep. The houses still made for some good photo ops and most had decent displays inside although English explanation was lacking. I was on a wheelchair which made almost half of the village inaccessible.
