Getxo is a town located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, in Spain. It is part of Greater Bilbao, and has about 80,000 inhabitants (2014). Getxo is mostly an affluent residential area, as well as being the third largest municipality of Biscay.

I think you can take a bus (or a taxi) to this place but I walked all the way from the Vizcaya Bridge. It's about 1.5 hour walk. You will pass through Las Arenas, then you will see the stunning mansions from early XX century, then the beach and you'll finally arrive to the cliff there you have the option to use the stairs or a lift (EU 0,20) then you have another 30 minutes walk to the actual Acantilados de Azkorri. The view to the port and to Getxo are incredible.

Transporter Bridges are where cars and passengers are transported across the river on a suspended platform. Although there are a couple in the UK (Newport and Middlesbrough), the one just outside Bilbao is certainly worth seeing. It shuttles back and forwards with very little waiting time, and there's a souvenir shop on each side. fares for passengers are really low and the local travelcard (Barik) is also valid. The Barik card also enables you to get there by metro or train - the nearest metro stations are in Portugalete on the West side and Getxo on the East; there's a nearer RENFE suburban railway station at river level on the Portugalete side, too. It is quite a climb up the hill to Portugalete metro - but don't worry, they have installed travelators (like in airports) at street level.
There's a small passenger ferry that shuttles back and forth across the river just upstream (ie. towards Bilbao). This costs 5 cents less than the bridge and is recommended to give you view from the middle of the river. While you're in the area, it's worth walking along to the sea front in Getxo.

This old port of Algorta is in the municipality of Gexto. The picturesque town isn’t too large to spend an afternoon wandering the labyrinth of narrow streets taking in the waterfront views, old stone pilings, colorful houses and buildings that are hundreds of years old, as well as wonderful little tavernas and restaurants. The port is definitely worth the visit especially since it is one of the few areas that have not been spoiled by commercialism.

Visited on a blustery day early March and it was a pleasant walk round the headland past the lighthouse. Surprisingly, the lighthouse is further inland than I expected - it’s also smaller than you might imagine and there’s no access into the building or grounds. We drove and parked in the surrounding housing estate which is obviously the wealthy part of the area as the houses are large and set in their own grounds. The cliff path meanders along the cliffs towards Soplana beach - for the initial stretch there’s a golf course bordering the inland side. The trail is paved so easy to walk or cycle along, plus there’s benches placed at intervals. A very pleasant area away from the bustle of Bilbao.

There are a number of interesting old buildings dating back from the 19th/20th century along both Avda Zugatzarte and Calle Atxekolandeta, as well as in Algorta itself. They make a nice backdrop as you walk the Promenade and pleasing to see some of the modern buildings interspersed between them are architecturally sympathetc. On the breakwater/retaining wall opposite there are descriptive panels which detail property individual histories. You can perhaps imagine what this gentrified area was like back in the 1920s. Not sure if they’re still privately owned but except for the balconies at the junction with Muelle de Ereaga they all look well maintained and make a nice backdrop to the town. The imposing “Palace” is the first building you see on Calle Atxekolandeta.

I think there are two information offices in Getxo but this is related to the one along sea front near Old Fishing Port. There’s parking all along the front and when I visited in March there were plenty of spaces available - no doubt it’s a different matter mid summer! The office is located in a building about half way along the beach Promenade and is modern and quite large inside. Staff really helpful and although I only wanted a map they were happy to spend time explaining the local attractions. Afterwards I carried on along to the Old Port area, around the headland to Playa Arrigunaga, back through the Old Town and along to “villa row” before finishing back up at the office where my car was parked. Handily there’s well maintained toilets at the back of the building with separate access. Just along from the office is a funicular up the cliff if you don’t fancy taking the steps further along.

This rather sad looking edifice stands on one side of the roundabout which leads along sea front towards Old Town area or along marina. Originally there was a fort here but when a house/mansion was built on the cliff above the owner had the balconies built as a retaining wall to stop the cliff slipping. The home is no longer there and although the balconies are in a state of disrepair I believe tours are available in summer. There’s an information panel on the sea wall opposite. Hopefully the local council will undertake renovations.

Walking up from the old harbour into the Old Town there’s a path which leads round the headland to the cliff above the beach from where you can look down and further along towards the lighthouse on the peninsula - you can continue walking along the cliff path in that direction and beyond towards Sopelana. There’s an old windmill on the far side above the beach and along the access path is a small pool and childrens play area. No doubt it’s all very busy during summer months.

Not sure how many malls are in and around the Bilbao area but this is the second we’ve visited - the other was at Ballonti just outside Portugalete and both are within easy access of motorways. Ballonti is much newer but shops/stores are more or less the same and so guess it depends which is the closest for you. Plenty of parking both in the open and underground. As well as the mall there’s other large stores dotted around the complex. Food court is on upper concourse and there’s a large Eroski supermarket at one end. To be honest I dropped my wife off and drove the short distance to Getxo Old Town area which saved my sanity but I did have to wander the mall looking for her when I got back!

The dimension of this beautiful church is testimony of the power attained by the Jesuits within the Catholic Church. Don't miss the interior of the church profusely decorated with coloured marbles and the gilded dome. Simply spectacular! A very interesting fact is that the medieval tower where Saint Ignatius was born is encased within the church complex, which was built 200 years later.
