The 10 Best Things to Do in Figueres, Spain

November 3, 2017 Carley Gatson

Figueres is the birthplace of Salvador Dali and home to the Dali Museum, one of the most-visited Spanish museums. Not surprisingly, it is the place for the lovers of fine art. Close to the border with France, this Catalan city offers great food, wine, and beaches. Figueres is just 15 minutes by car or 25 minutes by train from the beaches of Costa Brava. Not as touristy as Barcelona, the city offers a relaxing atmosphere, quiet cafes, an historic Old Town and square, and even a castle.

Dali Theatre-Museum

Instituted in 1974, this museum was built on the remains of the former Figueres Theater, and features a broad range of works of Salvador Dalí (1904-1989.)

Travelled to Figueres from Barcelona, which is around a 50 minute journey on a fast train from Sants to Figueres-Vilafant station. I paid just over €33 for a day return ticket. The Dali museum is around a mile away from the station.
The museum is housed in an old theatre, which is a lovely building. However, due to the nature of the layout, there are many bottlenecks especially in some of the more narrow corridors when it is crowded, which it invariably is.
The art on display makes up for this. There is a wide range of Dali's work on display, and much from his early days which is more conventional than his later stuff. There was also an amusing display of black and white photographs of the great man's moustache in various unusual scenarios.
Overall, it was an enjoyable and informative visit. Admission fee was €14.

Had previously booked dinner at the Castell Palace Restaurant Buffet. Highly recommend to book before going and go to the 8pm shift. Incredible food assortment and quality. Do not have lunch on that day!
Opera location was really original and play well mounted by Mario Gas. Unfortunately the main character of Turandot was executed by a goid soprano but the tenor Nessun Dorma was really dissapointing. He claimed to have a virus and sang just a very average area and being a small festival. There was no replacement nor compensation :-(

A l’intérieur : petite statuaire.
Bien de Interés Cultural Nacional depuis le 8 novembre 1988.
A voir.

Torremirona golf course is part of a complex including Hotel Relais; a spa with outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts;rental apartments from Villa Birdie; and numerous holiday homes.
The impressive views make this course a must play if you are in the Girona region. The first nine are more challenging than the back nine but overall it is a good test of your golf.
The 5th plays to an island green; the 6th and 7th have water features; the 8th is a tight hole between trees; and the high 9th tee offers magnificent views across the course towards the Pyrenees.
The 10th is a short par 3 protected by water and the par 5 18th tempts you to have a go in two over more water.
Disappointingly the catering facilities are poor with only the hotel offering food and drink. However, do sit on the balcony and enjoy a refreshing beer while drinking in the fantastic views!

Basilica of Santa Maria

Dominating the charming and atmospheric town of Castello d'Empuries, the Basilica speaks of a time when religion and politics were closely intertwined, and the local Counts were hugely ambitious. Architecturally interesting, wide a huge and wide nave, containing the tombs of several local rulers and various side chapels, this is a must see. The Basilica also contains a small ( pay to enter) museum of church artefacts, and we found the church personnel very welcoming and helpful.

Although a non golfer the hotel is not just a golfers holiday venue. The grounds and course are beautiful. The hotel is quite delightful, excellent staff, lovely dining room, great public rooms and the bedrooms are extremely comfortable. Exceptionally clean, lovely bathrooms. The breakfasts are a delight and the selection superb, beautifully cooked, constantly replenlished by the chef and always a delight.
We had the chef's tasting menu on the Saturday night with the appropriate wines, a delightful dinner and excellent value.
Very convenient for visiting Figueras and the seaside, would certainly stay there again

Even if you know nothing about the history of the area, this is a fascinating place to visit. Don't expect a lot of perfectly preserved building though, you're expected to guide yourself around the ruins with the help of an audio-guide. Fascinating (and lovely views of the surrounding countryside too)
(You can take an underground tour of the Reservoir and subterranean parts, but we didn't)
