Dokkum is a Dutch fortified town in the municipality of Dongeradeel in the province of Friesland. It has 12,576 inhabitants (January 1, 2017). The fortifications of Dokkum are well preserved and are known as the bolwerken (bulwarks). It is the fifth most popular shopping city in Friesland. It also had the smallest hospital in the Netherlands.

I had expected more of "Museum Admiraliteitshuis". The museum consists of two heritage buildings, connected with a covered bridge. The first part of the museum in building 1 consists of a diorama, dedicated to Bonifatius, the missionary, murdered in the vicinity of Dokkum in the 8th century. Further to the diorama is a light show, enacting the murder of Bonifatius, a bit boring and disappointing. Crossing the bridge to the second building, this is dedicated to the history of Dokkum. A special exhibition was shown, dedicated to the history of Dokkum in the time of Napoleon and the different factions in combat with each other. Generally speaking, the museum exhibits are never gripping and a visit can be skipped without regret. The good news is that entrance is free with the annual Dutch Museum Pass.

This is a developing open air museum close to the small town of Damwald in Friesland. Our group of teachers from Belgium, Italy, the UK and the Netherlands went there on a bleak afternoon in March and found it really interesting, notably because the main building reconstructed on this green field was for the preparation of chicory, a substitute for coffee popular in parts of north-west Europe and more widely in wartime. Two traditional drying ovens have been restored, there is a small room for viewing films of the process and the area in general a century ago, a museum space and of course a small shop and refreshments.
The overall focus is to recreate scenes from 1900. Three typical farmhouses have been moved to the site and filled with appropriate exhibits from the period depending on the status of the family which owned them. There are vegetable plots and an orchard. The next project to be taken on the volunteers is a water-mill.

Het klooster Claercamp was in de Middeleeuwen een zeer belangrijk en groot klooster. Na de reformatie is het klooster afgebroken en de terp is in de 19e eeuw afgegraven. Daarom is er nu in het landschap nauwelijks meer iets te zien, behalve twee grachten. Gelukkig zijn er wel bodemvondsten veilig gesteld. Het museum is gevestigd in een bijgebouw van een boerderij (B&B) dat tegenover het voormalige kloosterterrein ligt. Er zijn vitrines met vondsten, boeken over het klooster en de cisterciënzer orde, een diavoorstelling en de driedelige serie van Omrop Fryslân over het klooster wordt getoond. Er is een bescheiden horecavoorziening. Het museum is naast de genoemde openingstijden op afspraak te bezoeken. In de maanden november t/m maart gesloten

Jannum is een piepklein dorpje, bestaande uit een paar boerderijen, een paar huizen én een middeleeuws kerkje, dat na de restauratie een kerkmuseum is geworden. In het kerkje worden bijzondere vondsten getoond, zoals zandstenen grafkisten. Deze zijn ook afkomstig uit andere kerken in Fryslân. Er heerst een bijzondere sfeer in het kerkje, die versterkt wordt door de gregoriaanse gezangen, die digitaal worden afgespeeld. Rondom het kerkje ligt een aantal oude, gerenoveerde huisjes, die gehuurd kunnen worden als vakantiehuisje.

Leuk omgeving met vriendelijk staff en goed eten. De eten was en bbq. De vlees was goed voorbereid en de verschillende sla was ook heel lekker. Er was meer als genoeg voor iedereen. De zwier had wat beter gekund maar ik denk dat het is wel te regelen. Beetje achtergrond muziek was niet verkeerd geweest.

Our kids (twin boys from Dec. 2012) had a blast. It is the best playing area we have ever visited. They just had so much fun. A bonus is that there is a lot of fun indoors too if the weather changes.
The small zoo next door is really nice too. Even though it is not big, they have really interesting and child-friendly animals.
If you have small kids you should definitely go there for a fun day. Allthough one day is almost not enough.

It is not really at the end of the world, but it seems that way; the old fishing village of Moddergat lies in the extreme north of the province Friesland rubbing against the heavy sea dike, protecting the Frisian land against the Waddenzee. The museum "It Fiskershuske" (Frisian for "fisherman house") is situated in a number of heritage fisherman's houses. Free parking is available on a small parking area or along the road. Entrance to the museum is free with the annual Dutch Museum Pass. Moddergat was a fishing village and most of the people of Moddergat earned their living in the fishing trade. In 1887 a gale wiped out most of the fishing fleet and 83 fishermen drowned. The museum is dedicated to the history of the fishing village and the life of the families. Start with the presentation of a slide show to get an image of the life in Moddergat in the past centuries. Several houses are furnished as they were at the start of last century. Interesting is "Klaske's huske" which present the life of Klaske van der Lei, living in Moddergat in the last century. The jewel of the museum is the actual "Fiskershuske" which will be unlocked for you by someone of the museum staff. What makes the museum so special and worth the trip is the loving care which radiates from every exhibit and detail and the soul of the fishing village with the good times and bad times, which has been embedded somehow in this museum.

De Schierstins is een interessant gebouw: de van oorsprong kloeke verdedigingstoren is bewaard gebleven en is later uitgebreid met twee andere gebouwen, waarvan de een wat frivoler oogt dan de ander. In het gebouw vinden regelmatig tentoonstellingen, concerten en lezingen plaats. Tot eind februari 2018 exposeert Claes Posthuma zijn schilderijen van Friese states en stinzen. Leuk om deze eens in kleur te zien! Er is een aparte ruimte met de vaste collectie van schrijver Theun de Vries.

Een bezoek aan Hegebeintum (dat is de Friese naam voor Hogebeintum) bestaat uit een aantal onderdelen. In de eerste plaats het gratis Bezoekerscentrum. Hier vind je informatie over terpen in het algemeen, terpen in het gebied en specifiek de terp van Hegebeintum en Oosterbeintum. Er worden terpenvondsten getoond in vitrines. In het Fries Museum is uitgebreid geëxposeerd over het skelet van een vrouw, gevonden in Hogebeintum. Er waren belangrijke grafvondsten gedaan en haar gelaat is gereconstrueerd. Hopelijk worden onderdelen van deze expositie t.z.t getoond in Hegebeintum. Het tweede onderdeel is een bezoek aan de kerk. Dat gaat o.l.v. een gids en kost 3,50 Euro per persoon. Het laatste onderdeel is een wandeltocht over en rond de terp (en die is echt hoog met bijna 9 meter).
In het bezoekerscentrum is een kleine horecaruimte. Hegebeintum is bereikbaar voor rolstoelers, maar die moeten wel over een goede conditie beschikken of hulp hebben i.v.m. de hoge terp, die beklommen moet worden.

Tijdens deze workshop heb ik een vlinder gemaakt: een stuk glas in de vorm van een vlinder heb ik met gekleurd glaspoeder beschilderd. Heel gemakkelijk om te doen, het kan niet mislukken. Ben je niet tevreden, dan veeg je het weer weg en ga je opnieuw bezig! Na het bakken in de oven zijn de kleuren heel intens geworden. Ik heb mijn vlinder in huis staan en wordt er keer op keer vrolijk van als ik er naar kijk!
Jan en Atsje zijn erg gastvrij en helpen je als je even geen inspiratie hebt.
