Pharmacy Museum Bressanone

History of healing - the Peer collection ,,Small, but sophisticated" was the idea behind this specialized pharmaceutical museum, opened in 2002 at Bressanone in South Tyrol, Italy. The particular attraction of the museum lies in its unique combination of pharmacy, architecture and art. The modern showcases and contemporary art projects harmonize with the panelling in wood from the Renaissance area and the murals dated 1620. A rich collection of plants, animals and minerals coming from the whole world and used during the last four centuries as various remedies constitute the centre of the Peer collection. All the texts, explanations and descriptions avoid the use of technical terms and are suitable also for persons who have no background in the subject. Thanks to the clever didactic system, the museum provides general informations for hurried visitors as well as detailed knowledge for experts.

I know, I know, I shouldn't expect English when I travel to South Tyrol. This little museum has two rooms of non-scary medical devices, and fun little drawers of "natural" medicines (from plants and herbs, to beaver scent glands and rhinoceros horns). Everything is well labelled in Italian and German. There isn't much in the way of gory medical history as seen in medical museums in Ingolstadt, Germany and Chicago, USA. The hours are limited. But if you speak one of the two regional languages and are into medical history, this will be a quick yet insightful stop for you.

Housed in the former Bishop's Palace, you begin with a large collection of miniatures showing biblical scenes with many Nativity scenes. The medieval works of art were great. This was followed by several rooms of just average paintings. The Apartments were also very good although no English captions were available. In fact, there was no English guidebook available.

This was my second visit to Bressanone in 10 years. Our first was with family in 2005. We loved it so much we decided to take friends there in Aug 2015. We stayed at Gruner Baum hotel and enjoyed it immensely. We took advantage of great restaurants and spa retreats in the region. This spot gave us our walking legs back after such a long 3 week journey. So much appreciated !!!!
