The grand view is spectacular. It is only a short walk from the parking lot and is definitely worth a stop and a visit. The park ranger was super friendly and told us about the gorge and the park.

Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum

Note - the Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum have changed their hours and days of operation due to the Covid 19 pandemic. As focal points of Beckley’s lovely New River Park, the Exhibition Coal Mine, the Rahall Company Store, Mine Museum and the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia draw thousands of people to the area annually. The unique underground mine, the recreated coal camp, the Youth Museum and the Mountain Homestead are surrounded by inviting lawns, colorful flowers, picnic areas, an imposing coal miner statue and a whimsical 20 ft. “Peace Totem. At the Exhibition Coal Mine, one can ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. The guides are veteran miners and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and tasks of past and present day miners. In addition to the Mine, one can tour the Mine Museum and the period coal camp situated throughout the grounds.

We were so glad we visited! Knowing nothing about coal mines and how miners lived, this was so informative and interesting. From the coal mine tour, conducted by former coal miners to the pioneer village and coal miners’ buildings where docents shared their knowledge and answered our questions, this was a tour worth taking. Loved it all!

Tamarack Marketplace

The Best of West Virginia. A regional showcase of WV made arts & craft offers special events, craft demonstrations, a fine art gallery, a theater, a full-service conference center, and a food court featuring treats created by our master chefs.

Reviewed By phvi2617 - Anaheim, United States

This is such a cool and unique place: part tourist trap, part art gallery, part rest stop, part emporium for all things West Virginia. At its heart, it is a terrific marketplace showcasing the art, food, culture, and music of the Mountain State. There is really something for everyone, but even if you don't purchase anything, it's still a great place to walk around and see all the art. As a plus, everyone working there is super friendly and welcoming. If for nothing else, it's a good place for a pit stop off of Interstate 77; restrooms are clean, and it's right off of the freeway. Definitely a must-see!

Mountain State Miniature Golf

A fun and challenging 18-hole miniature golf course on a shady hillside. Each hole has a West Virginia theme.

Reviewed By JakenBake89 - Union Bridge, United States

Stopped here to play a round on our way to New River Gorge National Park (less than an hour away) because we had already heard/read about Mountain State Miniature Golf. We also enjoyed the coffee and hot chocolate in The Chocolate Moose which is part of the same establishment. The course had West Virginia-Appalachia themed holes: New River Gorge & bridge, Mothman, Wildlife, Seneca Rocks, Whitewater rafting, Coal Mining, Abe Lincoln & Civil War, Outhouse, Moonshining, the Rocket Boys, etc. The course being on a hillside made it more interesting. A challenging course and great fun! Turns out we had the course to ourselves that morning because it was so cold, but we played on and REALLY enjoyed the excellent coffee and hot chocolate afterwards. The owner and staff were very friendly and accommodating. Great place and great fun!
