The park is very beautiful, immersed in the nature. The animals have huge spaces, although some of them are very difficult to be seen (especially the Puma). Probably the best attraction are the monkeys and the buffalos. It's worth to pay the (quite expensive) ticket for a visit and I suggest to schedule a whole day. There are several restaurants, coffe shops and bathrooms, especially in the area closer to the Castle. So far so good. Anyway I was quite disappointed for some reasons that I am going to tell you now. First of all, this zoo is indicated already at the highway Exit, but inexplicably, the last two bifurcations are not indicated! So we just drove straight until realizing that we were already outside of the espected area...would it be so difficult to put two more indications after 15 already well placed ones ??? This of course made us nervous even before entry the park....
Second point: indications inside the park are a bit confusing in some bifurcations, especially in the area of the Restaurants where you still have to cross the "Asia" area but the indications only say "Africa -->". When we arrived there, we thought that we were going the bad direction and turned back, until realizing that we just climbed a lot of stairs again and for nothing because the direction "Africa" was the right one to go to the "Asia" area !!!!!!!!!!
The third point are the stairs: in the area of the restaurants there are huge stairs with something like 100 steps, with very unconfortable tracks for strollers (and remember that we did them three times, see previous issues :-((( . For the benefit of people with kids, there should be lift or treadmills similar to those of the supermarkets. Another negative point is the absence of rest areas for self-consumed meals. There is plenty of expensive restaurant but no one table to sit and eat your sandwiches. We did it on a bench, and being 3 adults one teenager and one child it was not easy...
The last Point are the Prices: one coffe Espresso 3,20 euros is really EXAGGERATED !!!!
So, honestly I have to say that if you are a couple or a group of friends with at least one person who already was there, then it is really extraordinary beautiful....but a zoo is made for children, isn't it? And in this case, if you go there for the first time with your family, let's be prepared to several troubles.

Nach dem nunmehr 40-jährigen Firmenjubiläum besticht das Cafe Loder, liebevoll genennt "der Luis", nach wie vor mit Charme und Freundlichkeit. Der traditionell geführte Familienbetrieb bietet viele ausgefallene Getränke-Kreationen, exklusive Whiskeys und Zigarren und ist vor allen an den Wochenenden ein beliebter Treffpunkt für die Jugend. Kleine Snacks (wie der wohl beste Toast des Landes, Baguettes und Schnitzelsemmeln) runden das Angebot ab.

Die Feistritztalbahn (Weiz - Anger - Birkfeld) ist eine jener wenigen Bahnstrecken, bei der man sich gleich in eine frühere Epoche zurückversetzt fühlt, als das Leben noch gemütlicher und ruhiger ablief. An die Dampf-Lok sind alte, noch aus der Gründerzeit der Bahn stammende, Personenwagen mit Holzbänken angehängt, das jeden echten Eisenbahn-Fan das Herz höher schlagen läßt und auch für Kinder einen tollen Ausflug darstellt. Die romantische Reise geht durch eine landschaftlich besonders reizvolle Gegend der Oststeiermark. Durch die kühne Konstruktion dieser Schmalspurbahn (zahlreiche Brücken, Viadukte und Tunnels) ergeben sich viele lohnende Motive für jeden Hobbyfotografen, auch für das leibliche Wohl ist mit einem eigenen Barwagen gesorgt.
Wenn man in der Hochsaison von Birkfeld aus nach Weiz fahren will, sollte man sehr zeitig schon vor Ort sein, da das Gedränge um die guten Plätze sehr groß ist. Für Kinder und auch Erwachsene ein schönes mehrstündiges Erlebnis bei dem abwechslungsreiche Höhepunkte garantiert sind. Falls man in Weiz aussteigt und mit dem selben Zug wieder zurückfahren will, ist meistens der Platz schon besetzt, da auch viele Gäste von Weiz diesen Erlebniszug in Anspruch nehmen.
Das Personal, meistens Eisenbahnfans sind sehr freundlich und geben bereitwillig Auskunft über die Strecke und die Eisenbahn, auch die Preise sind dementsprechend fair gestaltet.

We went early in the morning which was great for seeing the small zoo and the Gardens, but didn't work out for the castle tour. The first tour was at noon the day we went, and we had seen all we wanted to see by 10:30. We could have spent the hour and a half looking at more of the Gardens, or eating something in the restaurant, but restaurant was a bit pricey and it was a hot day. We saw as much of the castle as we could with the tour (mostly just the outside) and then headed back to our hotel. The price of the zoo, Gardens and castle tour, at the time we visited, were all included in one price. You could not pay for just one, or parts of the castle visit.
Great place to take children! And don't miss the modern art exhibit in the museum near the Gardens. Quite impressive.

Die Ölmühle Fandler befindet sich etwas außerhalb von Pöllau Richtung Höbing, man sollte unbedingt die Hinweisschilder genau beachten, damit man an der Straße zur Ölmühle nicht vorbeifährt. Die Ölmühle ist schon in der 4. Generation und hat sich der Produktion von kaltgepreßtem, sortenreinen, frischen, ungefilterten Erstpressungen verschrieben.
Die Ölmühle befindet sich auf einem sehr großen Gelände, der Schauraum, Verkaufsraum und Kursraum (für verschiedene Kochkurse) ist in einem neuen Gebäude untergebracht, das optisch sehr modern gestaltet ist, die Seitenflächen sind verglast, dadurch sind die Räume sehr hell. Der Schauraum ist modern konzipiert, mit viel hellem Holz, die Stellagen sind ebenfalls aus Holz, sehr schön gestaltet und nicht mit den Produkten überfüllt.
Es wird eine sehr große Auswahl an verschiedenen Ölen (Diestel, Erdnuss, Hanf, Kürbis, Mandel, Mohn, Traubenkern etc.), Bio-Ölen, Essig in einzelnen Flaschen oder auch Geschenkboxen angeboten, auch Verkostungen können durchgeführt werden. Das Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis ist OK.
Durch eine Glasfront kann man die Teile der Produktion beobachten.
Die Mitarbeiter sind sehr freundlich und geben sehr gute Hinweise, Empfehlungen betreffend der einzelnen Produkte. Ein Besuch ist unbedingt zu empfehlen, da hier der Eindruck vermittelt wird, hochwertiges Öl zu produzieren.

Wir sind nicht gläubig und würden daher nicht wallfahrten, aber auch auf unserer Wanderung hat uns diese Kirche am Pöllauberg schon sehr beeindruckt. Sie thront geradewegs auf dem Hügel und man sieht sie weithin übers Land.

Der ehemalige Stollen eines Silberbergwerks – neu genutzt - ist eine Attraktion, die man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte. Der "Almenland Stollenkäse Arzberg" liegt etwas außerhalb von Arzberg im Ortsteil Passail. Vor dem großen Gebäudekomplex mit dem Stollen in unmittelbarer Nähe gibt es jede Menge Parkplätze. Der ehemalige Silberbergwerkstollen in Arzberg sollte urprünglich als Heilstollen adaptiert werden, doch aus dieser Idee diesen verlassenen Stollen auch für Touristenführungen zu nutzen wurde dann eine andere und zwar „Käse im Stollen reifen zu lassen“.
In einem stillgelegten Seitenarm des Silberbergwerkstollens wurde zuerst ein mehrmaliges Testreifen von verschiedenen Käsesorten durchgeführt (die Grundprodukte kommen alle aus der unmittelbaren Gegend), bis sich der beste Reifungsprozess für die jeweiligen Käsesorten heraus kristallisierte.
Im März 2009 wurde dann der zweite Reifestollens “Franz-Leopold-Stollen“ (300m in den Berg) parallel neben dem alten Silberbergwerkstollen eröffnet. Seit einiger Zeit werden Erlebnis-Führungen in diesen Stollen und auch Verkostungen angeboten.
Wir wählten diese Erlebnis-Führung in den Franz-Leopold-Stollen aus, wir bekamen eine separate Schutzbekleidung, auch für die Schuhe, zusätzlich wurde diese dann noch desinfiziert, dann wurden die Tore in den Stollen geöffnet. Dahinter verbargen sich einige Seitenstollen, wo die verschiedene Käsesorten heranreifen. Unser Guide erzählte vieles über den Käse, die Geschichte der Firma und das Almenland, und wo wir viele besondere Eindrücke betreffend der Käsereifung gewannen.
Anschließend wurde im gemütlichen Grubenhaus eine Käseverkostung (Käseteller oder Käse-Schinkenteller) der erlesenen Käsesorten durchgeführt. Diese Käsesorten haben durch die lange Reifezeit wirklich einen einmaligen Geschmack, die Produkte können im angrenzenden Genussladen erworben werden. Die Führungen sind auch im Rahmen der Genusscard möglich.

Ich stehe total auf regionale Produkte und der Laden ist für mich spitzenmäßig! Super Personal: freundlich, hilfreich, professionell! Manchmal dauerts etwas länger, das nehme ich aber gern in Kauf! Ich komme regelmäßig da hin und absolut empfehlenswert ist die vegetarische Käferbohnensuppe! Unbedingt probieren! Ich liebe sie!

I went to the Schöckl mountain with bus 250 from Graz, Jakominiplatz. The journey takes around 35 minutes. During my visit there were few people and some cows at the top :)
It offers good view of surroundings, also the city of Graz is visible in the distance.

One of the best things if you live in Graz (or if you have a friend you can visit) is that you can escape the city noise in no-time and you're already in the Mountains.
This place is also within 30 minutes of drive-time from the city. From there you can take the cable car which will get you on the top in 10 minutes. If you are more into hiking you can get there also on a trail, but be prepared that it's quite steep.
Once on the top you will have a stunning view of the surroundings, with green hills full with.. you've guessed: cows. You can also see the city in the distance, reminding you how peaceful it is up here compared to the city noise.
If you are hungry there are also a couple of 'restaurants' where you can eat some traditional dishes. The prices are quite O.K.
There is also a bob track that you can try for 3.5 Euros, it's quite a bargain. It's on rails, so you won't fall off, unless you do something really stupid.
Overall, it's a nice place to visit if you want to spend the day in the nature.
