The World of Glass

Reviewed By alan472016 - Clitheroe, United Kingdom

We did not have high expectations of this visit but, wow, what a surprise. The welcome started at reception and we were shown how to get round the museum to all the exhibits and special exhibitions. The local history section was so well presented and a total surprise. Very interesting industrial archaeology The cafe was so refreshing with 'home-made' food quality. A great day out for all ages. There are a couple of things the management need to consider - the web site does not do the experience justice and there is no mention of accessibility for wheelchairs etc - it is fully accessible but they don't say so! The entrances into the kiln lack signage.

Houghwood Golf

Magnificent panoramic views over the Lancashire plain and the Welsh hills makes Houghwood an interesting course to play. At par 71 and 6388 yards for men, and 5341 yards par 71 for ladies, it provides a stimulating and pleasurable test of skill. The large greens built to USGA specification are probably the finest in the area and a permanent track allows the use of the large fleet of buggies and trolleys the whole year round. Visitors whether groups, societies or individuals are all welcome at Houghwood. Please note we are a soft spike course.

The Glass Horse

Reviewed By jackmusker - Liverpool, United Kingdom

I was in here last night (Saturday 8th August) with 6 other people for drinks and to watch sport on one of the many many many TVs. The staff are always friendly and quick to serve you. I have been many times before and found the staff to be nothing but attentive friendly and just nice people. The food is tasty and very good value for money. Social distancing is well maintained, as is track and trace, which is key these days. They are always cleaning and wiping down tables so that you generally feel safe there. It is an all round good place to spend your time.

Theatre Royal

Reviewed By rachantro - Warrington, United Kingdom

Just had a fab night out with the family (2* boys - ages 10 & 6 and hubby) at our annual family Christmas pantomime at the theatre royal in St. Helens. This year it was Aladdin, and like previous years it was brilliant!! There was the jokes for the boys to understand, plus the near the knuckle jokes for mums and dads (which thankfully went over the boys heads) - it was pure family entertainment. What is also good here are the reasonable prices for soft drinks (£5 for 2 * cokes and 2 * fruit shoots) - I have paid this for 2 * fruit shoots at other venues. The ticket prices are reasonable too, and whilst they may not get the ‘big names’ as cities may have, the cast are superb - with a mega widow twanky and wishy washy. If you want fantastic, reasonably priced family entertainment I can’t recommend here enough - you’d be mad to miss it. Will defo be here again next year!!!!

North West Museum of Road Transport

Our visit was the weekend with the opportunity for a trlp on a classic bus round St Helens The museum building is in the original tram and trolleybus depot which is a great atmospheric setting which the roof has been restored to a high standard giving great photographic opportunities. The interior walls display many varied transport photographs and enamel signs. Display photographs displays have brief informative captions. The buses on display range from fully restored high quality to under restoration. Many have an interesting history and a highlight was the tale of the Sydney Corporation bus and how it has arrived at the museum. The refreshment area is at the entrance next to a modernized glass external wall which blends in sympathetically with the rest of the building. Its basic fare of drinks and on this day sausage sandwiches which was served from a clean static van. Staff were pleasant and visible and available for any questions. Also available at the refreshment area for the children was a large wooden model railway and at the back of the depot on this day three model railway layouts were running and on display. At £4 entrance fee its an inexpensive day out.
