Longwood Gardens

In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Though May is somewhat of an in-between time, Longwood never disappoints. The indoor conservatory is always "in bloom"with different plants and flowers every season. The fountains are fun to watch...the gift shop is lovely (though a bit expensive)...and the restaurants are always good - mushroom soup to die for.

This was a really fun spur of the moment afternoon. Really interesting to see how mushrooms grow and learn about the history of Kennett Square mushrooms and especially the Phillips family. Gift shop is interesting and has unique gifts. It was wonderful to purchase a variety of fresh mushrooms to take back to New York! Staff was exceptionally helpful and nice. Definitely a stop to make time to visit! Would go back when visiting near Philly to get freshest mushrooms.

French Creek State Park

This was our first visit to the park, so we went into the Park Office to get a map and advice on an easy hiking trail for 2 seniors and our 2 dogs. We were told that the loop around the lake was well marked and easy. We parked our car, had a picnic lunch, used the clean restrooms, and enjoyed the hike. There are small round signs "Hopewell Lake Loop" marking the trail, which goes through wooded areas with some parts close to the lake. We definitely plan to return to this park and try another trail now that I have a map and know how well marked all of the trails are.

We were looking for a local winery to visit before going to Longwood Gardens and I’m so happy we found Penns Woods! We were there on one of the first days reopening after Covid and the winery has done a wonderful job in adapting to the state requirements. We booked a tasting, which was held outside in a pavilion. They had a seating every few hours and the group (at socially distant tables) all went through the tasting together. We tasted 5 wines and the hostess talked about each one as we tasted. For our $25 tasting fee, we had 5 generous samples (much larger than a normal tasting), an individually packaged snack tray, and the full size wine glass to keep. I would definitely return!

Avondale Field Wines We are a small family farm that produces wines in the ancient methods of 'uvaggio,' from field blends of north italian and french varieties. The farmer is the winemaker, and only estate-grown grapes are used, to produce four small-batch wines. In these bottles we strive to offer unique dry table wines. We hope very much that you enjoy them. -- Anthony and family. Our family invites you to join us in this cozy 19th century barn, for small-batch wines made from this field: By the glass starting from $8, by the bottle, and in the Field Wine Tasting Flight, a reserve-style tasting featuring four current releases paired with bites of local food specialties and seasonal tidbits from the farm ~ $20. *Please be aware that we are a very small family farm and regrettably unable to accommodate groups over 6 persons please *

The Colonial Theatre

The 658-seat Colonial Theatre is located in the heart of downtown Phoenixville, Pennsylvania at 227 Bridge Street. Opened in 1903, the Colonial is the last surviving of four theatres once existing in the borough and is the only theatre of its kind in Chester County. In its early days, the Colonial was home to live stage shows, vaudeville acts and musicals including appearances by Harry Houdini and Mary Pickford. Real movie buffs know that the Colonial was featured in the 1958 science fiction classic, "The Blob," starring Steve McQueen and filmed in and around Phoenixville. The theatre is owned and operated by the Association for the Colonial Theatre (ACT), a nonprofit corporation, which re-opened the theatre in 1999. The Colonial's programming includes art and independent films seven nights a week, classic films, cult & horror films, programs for young audiences, live concerts, and community events. ACT is committed to the full restoration of the Colonial as a cultural arts center.

The non-profit Colonial Theatre is a great venue in Phoenixville! It offers both live concerts and movies, including silent movies accompanied by the only publicly performing theatre pipe organ in Chester County. Movies are both first run and classic films. The costs are not high, and I became a member to get even more perks. Strongly sugegst a visit to the Colonial.
