Beerenberg Farm

Beerenberg Farm is a "must visit" for all food lovers visiting the Adelaide Hills. One of Australia's oldest family-owned jam, condiment and sauce producers, it is now run by the sixth generation of the Paech family on their Hahndorf farm. Open all year round, 7 days a week (except Christmas Day), the farm shop is open 9am to 5pm. Enjoy a leisurely browse through the complete collection of farm-made products in the delightful farm shop. During strawberry season (November to April), bring the family and pick your own strawberries from 9am to last field entry at 4.15pm. Patch entry is $5.00 per adult (13 years and under are free). Strawberries you pick are then weighed and are $10.95/kg.

We visted the farm on a beautiful morning not long after opening and was already getting busy. We had some great family time picking in the strawberry patch and filled a few tubs. They taste so sweet and fresh. The visitors shop is full of good things. The only thing we think that is missing is a cafe. Imagine being able to sit and have scones, strawberry jam and cream with a coffee or tea, i think this would be very popular and was something we thought would be there. Loved our visit.

Gorge Wildlife Park

A place where people and animals get together. See all your favourite Australian animals such as wombats, dingoes and Tasmanian devils. Feed the kangaroos and wallabies and cuddle a koala daily at 11.30am, 1.30 & 3.30pm

Reviewed By 912nicholasw - Colchester, United Kingdom

Spent a very pleasant four hours at this small wildlife centre. Very good value at $19 each plus another $10 for the ‘hold a koala’ experience. The holding session was well organised and the koala diligently posed with a number of visitors whilst concentrating on their eucalyptus leaves. Overall the centre appears to have approximately 50% of the wildlife roaming free whilst the majority of the caged animals and birds appeared to have enough space. Great variety of birds, animals and reptiles including native Australian species and others from overseas. The park is small enough to walk round in an hour but we found the more you looked the more you discovered. Only a short drive from Adelaide so easily fitted into a holiday schedule. Additionally worth a mention is the friendliness of the staff who mix in with visitors and were helpful throughout.

The Cedars

Six of us, including SA locals, interstate and overseas friends visited The Cedars where we took a self guided tour of the Han's Heysen Studio, a walk on the property (Artists Walk) and down to the green pool, followed by joining the guided tour of the House and self guided tour of the Nora Heysen Studio. We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the volunteer staff and guides were helpful and informative. One of our overseas guests even commented that she enjoyed it as much as visiting Monet's House and Garden in Giverny! The garden surrounding the house was lovely with many old fashioned plants and flowers and lawned areas, and the Artist's Walk took in magnificent gum trees on the bushland property.

Cleland Wildlife Park

The day at the park was awesome. I enjoyed to walk through the huge enclosures of the different kangaroos and wallabies. To hand feed the kangaroos was a great experience, to be close to them and to sit down and look at the kangaroos. Fantastic was also the Koala "close-up" experience in the morning. To enjoy this you have to be there minimum a half an hour before they start because there is a limited number of people who can do it and if you like they take photos with your own camera. And, There are a few other Koalas on eucalyptus trees, if you don't like to wait in line I spent a long time next to my favourite animal the Wombats. I saw my first white wombat and he was moving around. That was a memorable event for me. I was so fascinated by the wildlife and walking around there are also echidnas, potoroos, emus, birds and much more. It is a great Park to see lots of Australian Wildlife.

Somerled Wines

Rob was employed by Max Schubert, father of Grange, at Penfolds back in 1969. Now Rob’s running the most elegant, surprising and creative wine secret in the Adelaide Hills with his own family, Heather, Lucy and Emma. It’s not quite like anything else. Part cellar door and part wine bar, Somerled opens til 7:30pm every night. Front and centre of their website sits their weekly blog. Have a look now! Rob’s elegant and clean sparklings and whites contrast superbly with his mature and complex aged reds. According to The Advertiser, Somerled shirazes are ‘as close to Grange as you’ll ever get’. Lucy has recently re-introduced Wine Tasting Flights at their long marble bar, or try wines by the half glass or glass. Nibbles are abundant: try the warm cheese puffs, French toasties, warm anchovy sticks and their signature Spanish platters!

If you have called in for tasting their glorious sparkling, or their latest sauvignon blanc, or the rose, or their reds especially Nero d'avola, then stay and have absolutely the most superb antipasto platter available at any wine region in S.A. We have been travelling through all the wine regions; the platters vary, but this one is a must. The breads are lovely, the cheeses very good, the meats, cornichons, I could go on ... but the local olives are absolutely out of this world. Sheltered outside admiring the green lawns, hedges, vines and trees all with memories of Tuscany or Provence ... it is just an absolute delight, and we are so lucky to be on the doorstep. Fabulous for weddings or special events, Bird in the Hand touches you with its magic. Just go ... and often!
