Beck Isle Museum

Housed in what was intended to be England's first agricultural college, this fine historic building is Pickering's hidden gem. We have 27 areas of displays, covering aspects of local and social history. Thousands of objects are thoughtfully displayed in re-created period shops throughout the building. On our special event days we have a number of working craftspeople, demonstrating printing, rag-rugging, lacemaking, quilling, spinning and butter making. Get hands on in the Activities Room with a range of Victorian games and creative activities for children from dressing up to drawing. On a sunny day enjoy a picnic at our riverside picnic area. We are open 7 days a week from February to November. See website for times and prices.

I messaged Ian, asking if I could possibly order some rose ganache as part of a valentine’s gift for my husband. He messaged back to say they were currently out of stock but if I let him know what kind of chocolate (dark or milk) I’d prefer the bars to be made in, then he would make some that day and post them the following. True to his word, they were made, posted and received in Liverpool inside three days. Excellent service and even better rose ganache bars. I only wish we lived closer ????

We've been visiting this Aladdin's cave of second hand books for over 20 years and are never disappointed. The owner has a wealth of knowledge and is always cheery and helpful. With nothing costing over £3, it's a great place to add to your library; when our boys were young, they loved being able to get a pile of books for pocket money prices. Also, if you're having a clear out, you can take your old books in and get money off some new ones.

We were staying locally at Cropton cabins and looking for something to do on a day where the weather had let us down We were very pleased to book this - Bob the tour guide was an excellent host, very welcoming, knowledgeable and engaging and we spent a very enjoyable couple of hours on the brewery tour and then trying the beers in the bar afterwards, where brewery staff were also very chatty.

St Peter's & St Paul's Church

The mediaeval church of St Peter and St Paul sits at the heart of the North Yorkshire market town of Pickering. The church is best known for its collection of 15th century wall paintings - regarded as one of the most complete sets of mediaeval wall paintings in England - and the fascinating story of their rediscovery in the 19th century. The church is home to a large and active congregation which continues to meet here daily for the worship of God. Visitors are welcome between 9am and 5pm each day.

St Peter's and St Paul's Church has the best medieval wall paintings I've ever found in Britain, and as such a visit is a must for anyone interested in churches or medieval art. It also has an interesting tomb effigy of a 14th c knight, Sir William Bruce.

Cedarbarn Farm Shop

Reviewed By SharonJT67 - Durham, United Kingdom

The farm shop is small but has a good range of products, we’d eaten in the cafe on Wednesday 4th Nov & visited the shop afterwards, lots of locally grown fruit & vegetables, locally sourced milk, eggs & honey as well as freshly baked bread. As Christmas is approaching they had a number of hampers that were reasonably priced too. There was a small choice of ready prepared meals both fresh & frozen as well as gluten free options. We returned on Thursday to purchase a number of items, the fresh chicken Kiev was lovely the sausage roll was huge & delicious. We bought some of the fresh produce priced at £10 for 3 & when we opened the cool bag once home, the smell was amazing & made us wish we’d bought more. On the Thursday a number of the cakes & pastries were being individually sealed & available for sale in the shop which was a great idea, there were a number of loaf type cakes such as carrot also available. The only suggestion I’d make is to offer take away coffees for those visiting, we’d walked from Thornton & it would’ve been lovely to have had a hot drink (appreciate cafe was closed due to second lockdown but would’ve been a great option, as the cafe is the village was doing so). You can only enter the shop with a trolley & they are limited to 4 at a time so no worries about the measures, felt very safe!

Went to see the pantomime Goldilocks and the Three Bears last week. It was fabulous, beautiful costumes, characters well cast and the dancers just great. Lovely cosy friendly theatre. We had a great night out for only £12.00 each. Well done one and all.
