Road To Tibet

While working as a tour guide for seven years, I discovered how much I loved meeting travelers and making their Tibet dreams come true. This led to the creation of my own company, Road To Tibet, in 2007. Fast forward, and I have now welcomed more than 1,500 groups to the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR), Kham, and Amdo. Whatever your interests and budget, I can create the ideal itinerary and take care of all the arrangements for train and overland transportation, domestic flights, hotels, trekking guides, home-stays and special interests such as cycling and photography. Introducing my clients to Tibet and supporting my cultural heritage in this way is an honor I take very seriously. Please feel free to contact me. It's never too early to start planning!

Simply said, the best food you'll eat in Tibet. A 10 out of 10. We tried several dishes in our group and each one was spectacular. So much so, that we failed to even take a single photo of the food- we were so enjoying the eats. Google maps doesn't show the listing on Barkhor square correctly- when we were there in Oct 2019 it kept wanting us to go north for 10K.... But its there in Barkhor square. Go there and you will not be disappointed.

Jokhang Temple

Included on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2000 as part of the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple is in the heart of Lhasa downtown. With an area of 25,100 square meters (about six acres), it is the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Pilgrims. As the most sacred temple in Tibet, Jokhang Temple is situated in Lhasa city and attracts many pilgrims to worship and circumambulating around. The temple was founded during King Songtsen Gampo’ reign (617-650 AD). At that time, the King built the temple to welcome his two brides, Princess Bhrikuti from Nepal and Princess Wencheng from China in Tang Dynasty. Both princesses brought statues of Jowo Sakyamuni as their dowries, therefore, Songtsen decided to build a temple to house these important statues. Together with Jokhang Temple, Ramoche Temple was built as well to place the statue brought by Princess Wencheng. Later, the statue was moved to Jokhang Temple as well for better protection.

This is one of the most revered temples by Tibetan people and one can see this both inside the magnificent temple and also outside as many Tibetan people walk around clockwise around the temple praying with their prayer wheels and some even crawl around on hands and knees all round the parameter. the outside along the square is full of interesting shops too and one can easily spend days here just people watching.

Ani Tsankhung Nunnery

Ani Tsankhung Nunnery was built in the 7th century by Songsten Gampo who used its meditation chamber. The monastery is a yellow building which lies on the street parallel and north of Chingdol Dong Lu in Lhasa. Since the 12th century the monastery has been used chiefly by Buddhist nuns. The nunnery's main hall contains a beautiful image of Chenrezi, the multi-armed bodhisattva of Compassion. The sacred meditation chamber lies behind it.

Reviewed By tourist22903 - Charlottesville, United States

This nunnery was not as modest as seen in other parts of Asia where the nuns seem to get short shrift of the material wealth of the monasteries. Apparently the Jokhang Temple shares some proceeds with the nuns and they have a nice small gift shop as well. Outside were half a dozen nuns prostrating themselves over and over. We were advised that they are trying to match a past leader who did 100,000 prostrations. It would take them about a month, full-time, to accomplish this and they have some sort of clicker/counter on their wrists to keep track of the number. Sweet small nunnery and right of Barkor Square so easy to see after the temple.
