The 10 Best Sights & Landmarks in Nicosia, Nicosia District

March 27, 2022 Jasper Kershner

Nicosia, the capital of the island of Cyprus, has incorporated elements of the many empires and kingdoms that have claimed it over centuries stretching back to the Bronze Age. Narrow winding streets lead visitors from the Cyprus Museum, with its collection of Neolithic and Roman artifacts, to the thick city wall. Built in the 1600s by the Venetians, the wall now divides the ancient part of the city from the modern. Step through the stone gates and enter a place where the past is still alive.

Saranti Village

"At 1050m height a small beautiful village, built at the roots of three mountains all joining on a small river in the center. Because of the mountains, there is zero humidity. Probably the driest place in Cyprus. Two restaurants with delicious traditional food. The village is 300m away from an UNESCO treasure, "Panayia tou Araka", an amazing and unique monastery built in 1192 with pure trails of history." -A.G-

Panagia Asinou Church

Reviewed By yiannava - Nicosia, Cyprus

The church is located in the woods and the drive to the church is really scenic. It has amazing frescoes very well preserved. A book is on sale which offers full details. No audio guide. There is no artificial light inorder to preserve the frescoes. Wear comfortable shoes as the path to the church is cobblestone but access is not difficult. Can combine the visit here with lunch to one of the restaurants in the vicinity.

This monastery is an integral part of Cyprus's modern history and located in an idyllic location overlooking the valley. I set it as my half-way point while cycling the gorgeous and quiet hilly roads of Machairas and it was an uplifting place to visit.

Sacred Temple Of Virgin Mary Faneromenis

Reviewed By OTT12

The Church of Faneromenis located at the square of the same name is next to Ledra Street in Nicosia. Built in the latter part of the 19th century is one of the most important churches in Nicosia and a must visit if you are in the city. A spectacular gold leafed alter with fabulous hand painted icons in the Orthodox style really take your breath away. Cyprus has lots of important churches but this must be one of the most beautiful.
