TIRAZ Widad Kawar Home for Arab Dress

TIRAZ is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve and promote the rich and diverse Arab heritage & living traditions by creating uniquely themed exhibitions. It is home to the largest existing collection of Jordanian, Palestinian and other Arab Countries’ cultural heritage items, namely The Widad Kawar Collection, which ranges from costumes, weavings, home utensils, and jewelry.

If you want to have some insight into the history of Arab costume, this is the place. Exquisite needlework on garments that range from utilitarian to festive for weddings and other high occasions. Along with the Jordan National Museum of Fine Arts this is an experience necessary to anyone serious about an interest in Arab culture. I rate this as a MUST SEE in Amman. Forget the malls - you can do that at home. See what ordinary women did to enrich their lives and the lives of those around them through their artistic talent and vision for design and color. FABULOUS.

Museum of Parliamentary Life

Reviewed By Linway - Perth, Australia

This museum is on the road between 1st and 2nd Circle, and only 100m from our hotel, but we passed it many times without a second glance. However, having exhausted most of the tourist options for Amman, I came across the glowing reviews and, having a spare morning, ventured in. Rather than repeat what other reviewers have said, I will simply confirm that they are accurate and it is indeed a very interesting place to dig down into what makes Jordan the place it is today. Even if you regard yourself as not interested in "politics", the fact that Jordan stands out from its neighbours in being a relatively safe and stable democracy is worth investigating as to what they do differently. It is free, and as we were the only visitors at the time, we got a personal guided tour! The guide's English was very good and she gave a great presentation and was able to answer any questions we had. It is a bit difficult to find out the opening times (no website and no sign on the gate), but if you are in the area and see that it's open, don't be put off by the rather dull name, but take a look inside!

Roman Amphitheater

Step back 2,000 years in time with a visit to the ruins of this imposing amphitheater, which once held 5,000 spectators, and is still used today for theater and entertainment.

The Citadel

This archaeological landmark features remnants from several different cultures.

Reviewed By jenglos

We were fortunate to arrive at the citadel about 40 mins before sunset which meant we had the most atmospheric experience watching the sunset over Amman while the birds flocked to roost, with the call to prayer playing out from the Mosque. The citadel is a real land mark sitting high above Amman so the views are spectacular over the city. The Roman amphitheater is close by, but if you don't get time to go there you get a good view of it from here. THe site itself is of great archeological importance with Roman remains ( Hercules Temple) , and those of the Palace and church. AT 2JD , this is a must when visiting Amman.
