Jordan (/ˈdʒɔːrdən/; Arabic: الْأُرْدُنّ‎ Al-‘Urdunn [al.ʔur.dunn]), officially The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (Arabic: المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية‎ Al-Mamlakah Al-Urdunnīyah Al-Hāshimīyah), is a sovereign Arab state in western Asia, on the East Bank of the Jordan River. Jordan is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south, Iraq to the north-east, Syria to the north, Israel and Palestine to the west. The Dead Sea lies along its western borders and the country has a small shoreline on the Red Sea in its extreme south-west, but is otherwise landlocked. Jordan is strategically located at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe. The capital, Amman, is Jordan's most populous city as well as the country's economic, political and cultural centre.

Really nice place with a great view at the end. Saw this before Petra and it was a great introduction. I was given a nice tour of Little Petra and the Neolithic village nearby by Sami Amarein. Sami also offered to guide me for a hike to the monastery in Petra or stay in his Bedouin tent and have dinner but unfortunately I didn’t have time. Dear Jennifer, Again I apologise for bad time you experienced in your trek, I have nothing to say, but read the reviews of the other guests in your same group, and other groups this year. Caring beyond the call of duty. Experience and knowledge. Murad looked after us from the moment we met at the airport until we departed from Jordan. He even lent his walking boots to a group member who turned up ill prepared. As a consummate professional he took his responsibilities seriously but he was able to make the trek great fun. Murad was great. There was some difficulty with two members of a large and varied group who were struggling somewhat with the hike (both the tempo and the terrain). We also had several very strong and aggressive hikers, who were continually hiking ahead of the group, and were anxious to increase the pace. Despite briefly showing his frustration, he quickly regained his usual patience and diplomacy, apologized for any frustrations, found a reasonable solution, and the group continued with, in my experience, a very high level of camaraderie and enjoyment among the group. He deserves kudos for his handling. He also brought knowledge and enthusiasm to his coverage of the history, culture and geology of the fascinating country through we were hiking. His input very much increased my enjoyment of the trip. He combined the technical demands of a great hiking guide with a warmth, and diplomacy, that went way beyond the call of duty - as evidenced by his handling of some of the challenges that go with leading a large, diverse group over varied and sometimes challenging terrain. A great guide Murad was an excellent leader -- personable, knowledgeable, responsible, a pleasure to hike with. He was confronted with three very challenging group members. One consistently insisted on hiking ahead of the group, even though asked not to do so. Another clearly was unprepared for the grade of the hike, so the group had to stop often for her to catch up. Another (not a very strong hiker, herself) insisted on taking care of the weak hiker by hiking alongside her and coaching her every step. That hiker insisted that the difficulty of the hike was not clearly indicated on KE's web site and that there was no list obvious on the web site of clothing/other items needed for the hike. (She said she phoned KE and was told a sleeping bag was not needed, so did not bring one. Murad supplied her and her travelling companion with sleeping bags.) She also said that Murad did not speak properly with her (not so!). Murad could not have done a better job handling the difficult situation that these three hikers provided. He did so in a way that did not prevent the rest of the group from having a wonderful holiday. He deserves kudos for that. I would travel with hime again any time. He had all the qualities a leader should have - patience, enthusiasm, knowledge, a great sense of humour. He also had a great sense of responsibility, and rather than taking risks, he had us evacuated off the mountain in the middle of a wind storm Great trip. Our guide Murad and his crew will take good care of you and treat you like family. The food, fellow hikers and the sights were all out standing. This is the way to experience Jordan and to see Petra. Wear good boots the ground is very rocky. The trekking in jordan was excellent. Our guide Murad was passionate about his country and very knowledgeable with a great sense of humour. The food could not have been any better. Petra was amazing and our photographs cannot do it justice Guide Murad the best. Food best ever on a trek. Scenery amazing. My other trekkers a great bunch. I need to go back. Our guide Murat was first-class. He was very well-informed, funny, caring, alert to everyone's needs but perhaps best of all really meant it when he welcomed us into our new family and said we should consider Jordan our second home. Somehow he managed to make all 16 of us feel happy, as well as his 4 helpers and Happy the donkey. We all got on and all felt this was such a brilliant trip...'Best ever'. The scenery was jaw-dropping, the food lovely, the organisation superb etc etc. Just remember to heed Murat when he warns you of slippy slopes at the beginning. Kind regards Murad Arslan

Petra Museum

Located at the main tourist street and only three minute walk from the main gate to Petra. Opening Times Location Online bookingOpening TimesWe are open seven days a week throughout the year from 10 AM to 11.30 PM2000 years ago Petra society was described as "half Bedouin, half farmer". The same description was given to Petra society at the beginning of the nineteenth century. A team of partners and specialists have spent almost 10 years developing the idea of this exhibition to create a better understanding of the history and anthropology of the area. No one can deny the fact that the history of Petra is still alive. To explore this idea, we invite you to this new and exciting exhibition where you can see and enjoy a cultural experience:• Petra in the eyes of the first photographers.• Traditional tools and instruments.• An unforgettable cultural experience.• Local produce available to try and buy.We are trying to make our history understandable and to bring it to life. To experience all this, come and visit the new Petra Life Exhibition for Traditional Heritage, which must be seen to be believed! EXHIBITION SECTIONSA: Arabian coffee sectionB: Water and wateringC: Animals dresses and decorative accessories sectionD: Bedouin tent and weaving techniques sectionE: Bread making sectionF: Traditional construction tools sectionG: Peasant house sectionH: Agriculture sectionI: Leather- manufactured items SectionJ: Shepherding sectionK: Traditional costume, jewelry and beautifying sectionL: weights and measures instruments sectionM: Lighting sectionN: Recreation section (games and music)O: Weapons, defense means and hunting tools and techniques sectionP: Photo gallery (Petra in the eyes of the old photographers)Q: Medication, herbal and spices sectionR: Incense and aromatics sectionS: Traditional food sectionT: Cooking pots section Petra's long history stretches back through antiquity, the remains of which can still be seen inside and outside the ancient city. This is confirmed in both historical and archaeological evidence, which is at hand for specialists and far away from ordinary persons. It became evident to the owners of this exhibition, who are native of Petra, that the society of Wadi Musa and tourists should not be isolated and must be incorporated in many cultural activities and events.Recent studies have shown that human patterns of life continued to be almost the same from the Nabataean period up to the end of the Ottoman period. From that time onwards, modern changes related to the globalization and social changes affected the community as well as lifestyles which led eventually to the loose of a considerable part of our heritage and traditions. If the situation continues as it is, the historical memory of the region will be erased gradually. It is a matter of fact that the visitors of Petra do not have full access to the cultural heritage of the region either tangible or intangible. They have access only to the archaeological site and all the information provided are relevant to the monuments of the city itself. Preserving and presenting other cultural heritage elements as tourism products seems to be a necessity since the Petra region lacks such important places. It is clear therefore that creating new attractions in Wadi Musa will help tourists enjoy the Jordanian cultural experience. The establishment of this exhibition will create this opportunity for the visitors of the archaeological site of Petra. We have created this permanent exhibition showing the history and heritage of the greater Petra region which is the only one of its kind in the southern part of Jordan to focus attention specifically on the heritage of our recent past. It represents a unique and valuable source of information and provides the perfect environment for visitors to explore a broad spectrum of topics related to the heritage of this part of the world during the last two centuries.

We went the night before we visited the Petra site and it was a very useful introduction to the vastness of the Petra experience - a history and buildings which predates the Treasury by millennia. The building is an oasis of calm with 200 exhibits beautifully displayed and lit. Very informative display boards tell of the history and geology. The building is the gift of the Japanese government to the Jordanian government with wonderful use of stone and water

Took us a while wandering some small back streets in order to find this gallery. It was so worth it. You go in via a small wrought iron gate, up a few stairs and find yourself looking at the remarkable remains of the Byzantine church of St George. There is not very much left but a few columns, however the space and tranquillity of the setting is lovely. The path winds up through the garden to the galleries and a small cafe. The exhibition we saw had a powerful emotional impact.....photographs of life for people in Palestine. The coffee in the cafe courtyard also packed a punch and there is a great view of the city. In the morning we had visited the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, which was good but the atmosphere here was so much more vibrant. If you only have time for one gallery make it this one.
