Mercado De Artesanias La Ciudadela

For a great selection of Mexican crafts, visit the Ciudadela, four blocks south of the Alameda Park on Balderas Avenue just south of Paseo de la Reforma. It's a semi-covered market that covers 16,000 square meters with more than 200 stalls. It's worth quite a chunk of time if you want the full tour. There are some great comedores (food stalls) if you need a pick-me-up snack or beverage.

We we’re looking for Alebrije (paper mache colorful monsters) and we found a great selection. Lots of junk but the gems are here too.

El Bazar Sabado

This indoor and outdoor handicraft market in the historic San Angel neighborhood is artsy and colorful. Recharge at the charming restaurant in the courtyard of the indoor market.

We went to the Frida Kahlo Musem on the same day as El Bazar Sabado. The drive between the museum and the bazar was beautiful. We got to the bazar around 10.30 am and it was packed with vendors and tourists. There was so much beautiful artwork everywhere. The shops were diverse and wares were of high quality. We ended up staying for hours, with everyone in the house fully enjoying our wandering. The prices were great and we loved this colorful, artistic spot.

The market has an assortment of fruits and vegetables which you can expect in most markets. Notable to this market are the various types of cheese and exotic meats which include ostrich, crocodile and various types of insects etc. In the back of the market they have the skinned animals so this might not be the best place for squeamish folks. They have small food stalls/dinners so you can enjoy a various types of food and beautiful piñatas on the ceiling.

If I’d been staying in the area longer this would have been my favorite shop for produce...and flowers! A real treasure trove! We ate an early lunch at one of the food stands inside and their little vegan tortillas with squash blossoms were divine!
