Ben's Collectors Records

Reviewed By 716leonh - Kent, United Kingdom

Ben Darnton runs Ben's Collectors Records. He's a fun, forever-young, knowledgeable and very helpful guy. His shop has been independently owned for many years now, and despite the internet age, he has prevailed with a bricks and mortar store. His stock is forever changing with a massive array of material. Every now and then, people will park outside to sell their collections - particularly at weekends. If you're very lucky, as I have been in the past, some real rare gems arrive. They don't often last long! Ben doesn't charge the silly values that are attached to a lot of valuable vinyl. This makes you feel that you have found and bought a bargain. Over the years, I have found some true rarities in Ben's shop, including a UK original Funkadelic 'Maggot Brain', many old 1950's Jazz guitar records, a multitude of 1960's rock and blues classics including a copy of Led Zep 1 with turquoise lettering, The Sound of '65 by Graham Bond Organisation - plus many, many more - all in fab EX to NM condition too! Ben has been kind enough to reserve me a few 'must-have' records over the years too. The real magic though, is the ability to sift through racks and racks of vinyl, then suddenly stumble upon something you've long been looking for. As you pull out LP after LP, your head is totting up the total, and you're left feeling that you need to keep on going and find more. The prices are certainly not what you would pay on eBay or Discogs. :-) Every time I visit Guildford I try to allow at least an hour to browse Ben's shop and have a catch-up. In short, BCR's is a vinyl collectors dream. Thoroughly recommended!

Fender started it!!! They sent me an email about a new stratocaster that they were going to release. And I looked at it...and thought....how blissfully bonkers and bizarre. White, with THREE gold HUMBUCKERS.....yes...you read that right. Time went on...and they released it. And I just had to have it. You know how it is. So I went shopping in London. And began that laborious task of finding one that spoke to me.... The first one didn't speak to me at all when i tried it in North London, and several other shops didn't have it in stock yet. So after a long day which achieved nothing, I went home. Then something hit me in the back of my mind. Wasn't there a guitar shop in Guildford that i had seen on the internet? The following day I caught the train back into London and then headed down to Andertons. They had one of these strange looking guitars in store and this time i jelled with it. I didn't buy it simply because i found a blemish that had occured at the factory. Shame on you, Fender. It was in the most ridiculous place imaginable. However, already I had become impressed by Andertons. They gave me so much time in spite of being really busy. And they had private soundproof booths where you could roadtest your potential new purchase without anyone else giving you marks out of ten. How fantastic is that!!! So I returned home but had already made a commitment with them that I would definitely buy from them. And I keep my word. I waited patiently until they had more than one in stock, and then went back to try them. On 24th May 2019 i tried number three. Usually it takes me less than a minute to know if a guitar is right for me.I don't even have to plug it in. After 20 minutes i thought....damn it, it's still not THERE.... And with no problem whatsoever, one of the guys went to get number four. He handed it to me and said that that one just felt a little bit different. And he was right.Less than a minute later I took it back to the sales counter beaming from ear to ear and said ' ooh, yes please'. And it still talks to me even now!!! Buying a guitar is a deeply personal experience. The instrument must not only speak to you, all the components must also speak to each other. Andertons staff understood this to an advanced degree. They treated me and my £700 quid purchase with the same respect and time as they would have if I was spending thousands. I didn't feel rushed or pressured. They gave me TIME. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the most valuable commodities in the world! My interaction between myself and the staff on the shop floor was superb. It was a chap named Matthew who finally made the sale. My interaction with the mail order guys on the 'phone was also excellent too. Thank you Joe. So there we have it. Well done, everybody! For those of you who have read this far, the guitar i purchased was a Fender limited edition mahogany body blacktop strat 3 humbucker in opal white with gold hardware and pau ferro fretboard. Made in Mexico. It compliments my other strats very nicely.

The Pop-Up Gallery

A celebration of art and nature - also raising awareness of mental health and climate change. Feeling & Matter will exhibit the diverse creative output of the English painter, sculptor, picture restorer, writer, husband and father, John Rich. "An artist is both creator and creature of art, a product and producer of its history, the past to which the artist responds and the future for which he or she is responsible." John Rich, a contemporary of Peter Blake and David Hockney and exhibited alongside them, would go on to have critically successful one-man shows. However, he found the commercial art market too limiting and chose to follow his own path. Works include those on loan by Lord & Lady Levy. The adjoining garden complements the gallery and reflects the harmonious life-long relationship between the artist and his muse. Open July, August, September 2019. Saturdays & Sundays 12noon to 6pm. Other times by appointment. Examples of the artist's work can be seen at the website.
