MAEL's ABSTRACT ART GALLERY

I live in a National Park where everybody make an effort to protect the environment. Everyday I can see turtles, monkeys, whales and all kind of animals. I live naked most of time and that's how I paint too. At sunset time I go to the beach where I play, swim and surf. Being surrounded by nature I can feel a total isolation from the rest of the world and see nothing but a pristine tropical forest from my house. I also have the chance to travel all over the World with my parents. Nosara is a mixte of all kind of people, just in my Montessori school we have 20 different nationalities. I am fluent in three languages and we practice art and yoga on a regular basis. Some of the villagers (and my nanny Yerlin) have a strong resemblance to the indigenous, they were never slave and you can sense and enjoy that in the present. We never had war and we don't have an army so we are peaceful people. My imagination is build on all those images, sensations and concepts. My experience in Nosara is the key of my work and my sense of the World.

We left this little shop with big smiles on our faces. Not only did we get some good deals, we also loved the owners Antonio and Valeria. Antonio speaks english fluently and is a very articulate gentleman. He took the time to chat with us about recent history of the area and he gave us some excellent advice about our planned visit to Palo Verde National Park. There is simply no substitute for local knowledge! Their young assistant, Diana, helps out in the store but also works in their little cafe and their adjoining outdoor restaurant. The shop is FULL of local handicraft items. They have a very nice variety of wood carvings, handicraft boxes, pottery, paintings, inexpensive jewelry and Costa Rican coffee. He generously offered us a 10% discount for paying cash even though we didn't ask. Prices in beach towns seem to be about 30 to 50% higher for comparable items. The shop is located on the main road between Liberia and the beach towns of Conchal, Brasilito, Playa Grande, Playa Flamingo and Palo Verde National Park and other tourist destinations west and south of Liberia. Stop in...you won't regret it!

We stayed in Atenas and bought our produce at the local farmers market on the Friday (runs Fridays 3pm-9pm, Sat all day). The produce was so much fresher than what you would find in the local Maxi Pali. Also, saw a huge difference in produce freshness when staying in Atenas vs coastal in Puntarenas. If you're staying in Atenas, try and check the market out to stock up on your produce. Can't go wrong!

This is located on a very bumpy back street and sticks out of its surroundings because of the colorful front. The mosaics are amazing - both what’s for sale and also the floors. There are unique gift items at all price points. Highly recommend a visit.

I was initially concerned that this would be a tourist trap with pressure to buy and little useful information provided, but it was just the opposite. Very interesting tour, and no pressure at all; they even offered fresh fruit and drinks. What was particularly impressive is that they are using almost exclusively water-powered machinery to make the carts and cart wheels – and it seems to be almost 100 years old. Fascinating to see how the water wheel powers all of the equipment, and you get to see it in operation. Really enjoyed the tour, and they are certainly proud of what they do, and they do it very well. There is of course a shop where all sorts of items are available, of very good quality, but, like much in Costa Rica, the prices are quite similar to US prices. Also check out the largest oxcart in the world (in Guinness Book of Records), about a 10 minute walk away, in the center of town, close to the church - painted just as the ones in this factory.

Galeria Namu

Galeria Namu is a fair trade art gallery for local and indigenous artists from Costa Rica and surrounding Central America countries. Established in 1998 at this same location, visitors to Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose can find us easily behind the Holiday Inn (across from Parque Morazan).Knowledge and passion for the artists and their work is what makes a visit to Galeria Namu special; the owner, Aisling, and her son Conall, along with their support staff love to share with visitors the background of the tribe or individual artisans and the remarkable collection of unique and very special pieces available for purchase. For the past 15 years, Galeria Namu has nurtured a relationship with the artists who create folk art, gold and jade replicas, handwoven baskets, originals paintings, tagua carvings and jewelry and much more. Visit the website for hours and a sampling of what you will encounter. Be prepared to catch their enthusiasm for fair trade with these local arts and crafts.

The store provides a wide range of artistic and unique goods from all over Costa Rica and is clearly a place to go if you are interested in authentic pieces which are locally made and support local artists, It is therefore also not necessarily on the cheap side but you can find things in every price range, I really liked that we were given background information on the items we bought and the artists and communities which produced them. It is clearly worse a visit and highly recommended.
