St. Andre Cathedral

This beautiful 17th century church is one of Bordeaux's main attractions.

Reviewed By JElliot32 - New South Wales, Australia

Bordeaux's cathedral is massive Gothic pile, very reminiscent to us of many other Gothic churches we visited around France and Spain. But there was also plenty more about St Andre's to ensure we did not succumb to 'cathedral overload' here. Its towering spires, highly decorated doorways and flying buttresses all catch your eye from the square outside, while from the inside the ribbed vaults of the soaring ceiling and the light shining through the stained-glass windows are awe-inspiring. Best of all though were the cathedral's magnificently decorative rose windows. Also of note is that Eleonor of Aquitaine married here in 1137.

Abbaye aux Dames

The Abbaye aux Dames is today the musical hub of Saintes. It was the first convent in the Saintonge region. The nuns were powerful women, wearing crosses and striking coins. The influence of the abbey was vast. This is still true today thanks to its musical activities and its unique architectural heritage. The Notre Dames church is a pearl of Romanesque art. The portal is richly decorated. The bell tower, in the shape of a pine cone and covered in stone scales, can be visited. Why not follow the path to heaven, you'll find a panoramic view over the town of Saintes. Discover the convent building, from its chapter house to the nuns' private quarters.

We walked over the harbour bridge after visiting the smaller 'Eglise Saint-Vincent' which is also worth visiting. However this church is on a much larger scale with a very impressive altar. The organ was also playing at the time which made for a wonderful atmosphere.

Eglise Notre-Dame de Peyragude

Reviewed By DebbieT1962 - Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

Either walk through the village passing quaint old houses with original features and architecture quite steep in places or you can drive up. When up at the top you are greeted by impressive cathedral both from the outside with its silver domes which twinkle in the sunlight and inside where the stained glass windows and decoration is impressive and tranquil. The views from the top over the surrounding ding countryside and villages is magnificent. Well worth a trip.
