Paulo gave us a full day tour (walking and van) of Lisbon with emphasis on the Jewish history. He also took us to the small Ashkenazi synagogue where we learned about the synagogue's history from one of the members and viewed many of their historical artifacts, We had a one hour lunch with him in a small restaurant where we were able to learn about his personal history and get more information about Jewish Portugal.

This is a late review, but necessary. We thoroughly enjoyed our private day tour with Sintra Magik in Fatima. The Shrine of course was incredible. The visit to the family home and meeting their descendants were equally touching. We sampled the local cuisine and appreciated the hospitality. Our tour of the religious factory allowed us to return with artifacts for our family. We were so fortunate to have a delightful Irish priest bless these keepsakes. An awesome, memorable day. We highly, highly recommend this tour group.

For our visit to Lisbon just after Christmas, we had a specific list of places we really wanted to try to see in the immediate area north of the city – Sintra town, Quinta da Regaleira, just the outside of Pena Palace, the surrounding forest to Cabo da Roca lighthouse and Atlantic coast. Also Tomar, Batalha, and Obidos, if possible. However, the more I searched, the more apparent it seemed that I wasn’t going to be successful in finding a tour that fit us exactly. Then by luck, I found Jumpin Tours mentioned in a blog. I was immediately attracted to this small company because it described their itineraries as flexible, exactly what we were after. After reading some great reviews, we contacted the company with a few questions and were impressed by their quick response. We booked 2 of their day tours. Our driver/guide was Antonio for the Sintra/ Cascais Tour, and Gui, for the Obidos Tour. Each picked us up on time at our Lisbon apartment, was very polite and friendly, relaying lots of interesting stories on the comfortable drive out of the city. Portugal’s highways and roads are modern and well maintained. Each driver is very smooth and professional - we felt ‘in good hands’. They are both from the Sintra area, with insider knowledge of the local roads and parking. Each knew that we would not encounter crowds in early January, so we bought regular entrance tickets at the sites. Antonio and Gui started us out at each site with a good overview, then accompanied us through some, while at others, suggested things to look for, allowing us enough time to explore on our own. The pace was quite relaxed for both tours. On the Sintra/Cascais Tour, Antonio started with a stroll around the small town of Sintra, just a half hour from Lisbon. Next we headed to impressive Quinta da Regaleira, and had a great time exploring the beautiful grounds and house of this unique and amusing place, thanks to the advance tips he offered. At our next stop, he encouraged us to try the pathway system up to Pena Palace (he was right-we could do it!) while enjoying the gardens along the way. In the palace courtyard, he relayed stories and legends, then invited us to ‘walk the walls’ and take in amazing views from underneath the huge colourful turrets. The early afternoon drive through the cork forests of the Sintra National Forest brought us to a waterfront town, where Antonio left us to enjoy lunch at a seafood restaurant alongside the beach. Afterwards, he took us for a stroll of the pathways overlooking the Atlantic near the Cabo da Roca lighthouse, so delightful on an exceptionally warm and sunny winter’s day. We watched an amazing sunset unfold as we returned through Cascais on the way back to Lisbon, saying our goodbyes once again at our apartment. The Tomar, Batahla, Nazare, Obidos tour was a little farther distance, about an hour and a half drive, but well worth it. In the small town of Tomar, Gui gave us an overview of the Knights Templar in the fabulous castle courtyard entrance, and then we went in to explore the vast site on our own. Just a little west, Batahla was a worthwhile and interesting historical stop too. Lunch was at a hotel restaurant along the main waterfront in the surfing town of Nazare – post-holiday, even the waves were quiet that day. We lucked out with a warm sunny day there too. It was nearing the end of the day by time we got to Obidos, but we still had enough time to enjoy a drink of the town’s signature Ginja drink, offered in cute little chocolate teacup, while wandering its back lanes and admiring the views of the surrounding countryside from the medieval walls so high up - with time to buy a few souvenirs. You won’t be disappointed by choosing this company. Thanks Jumpin Tours, for providing us some great memories. Stay safe and well, everyone.

We spend a long afternoon and evening with Filipe and it was wonderful. I highly recommend him. We visited Sintra and the amazing Perla Palace , the Quinta Regaleira and had the lovely pastry specialty of Sintra. Filipe is a very pleasant charming person to be with, he is very knowledgeable about, the area, the sites, the history and so much more. Time flies with him. We ended the evening in a great fish and seafood restaurant hanging on the side of a cliff Azenhas do Mar. If you are in Lisbon take one of his tours and enjoy.

While the title seems to say it all, to put it into context, we have been traveling for 30 years and always arrange for our own guides even if we are on a cruise. Not only did Paulo have a tremendous depth of knowledge about both the past and present of Portugal, he had the ability to tell the story in a concise and relevant manner that was engrossing. There were a number times during our day with Paulo when we would say to ourselves, "This is the best guide that we have ever had"! And indeed he was.
