An awesome spot to stop for a bit. Very beautiful but you need to be careful because it's difficult to reach. Amazing pictures and time that you can spend over there.

Parque do Castelo e Paco dos Duques de Braganca

In the mid-900s A.D., this castle was constructed. A National Monument since 1910, this castle did see conflicts associated with the growth of a unified and independent Portugal. The displays in its museum are very good and you can get an accurate and complete outline of the history of Portugal by purchasing a "Guimaraes Pass" which gains you access toa dozen of the historical and archeological sites in the Guimaraes area. Highly recommended - especially because the pass is good for several days and the old town is beautiful.

Cascata do Arado

This is such a beautiful place to take children. At 11 and 13, mine are old enough to scramble about the rocks and paddle in the river near the bridge downstream. if you go further up and over the small plateau, you get to an even lovelier part where there are libellulas (dragonflies but it's such a lovely word in Portuguese I felt I had to add it) and smooth-rocked pools. It's worth the windy roads that give one rather a headache!
